It's a magical episode of House!
Dr. House made one of his fellowship candidates, Dr. Cole, disappear! Cole, for his part, had managed to make Dr. Cuddy's thong mysteriously appear. And viewers were finally treated to the long-teased diagnosis of lupus in the main patient, a magician.
The plot involving which of the candidates could snag Cuddy's thong turned out to be far less irritating than I thought it would be. I was afraid that we would be subjected to a numbing series of wacky attempts by the various candidates. But the show managed to dispense with the wackiness reasonably quickly and had Cole produce the desired item of clothing.
Another reason the thong plot turned out better than I expected was that it had a meaningful payoff. Cole's method of victory -- cutting a deal with Cuddy -- led directly to his firing. I was afraid that it was just going to be another example of House being a jerk for jerkiness' sake.
It was nice to see Cole and Dr. Kutner out on the town at the magic show. The candidates ought to be socializing a little bit. It's too bad Cole won't be around to try to make up for putting his pal's head on the chopping block.
Had Cole a little more sense, he would have double-crossed Cuddy and put Dr. Volakis plus, say, Dr. Taub on the chopping block. House would've likely picked Volakis anyway.
I was surprised that the show went with lupus now. I always thought it would have been saved for the series finale. I could have even conceived of it being saved for a season finale. Playing the lupus card in this episode seemed a little underwhelming.
I was also kind of surprised that House tossed away the envelope with the results of the test for Huntington's he ran on Dr. 13. I don't think he would have done that in the first season.
I was pleased to see House's Vicodin make a comeback. We haven't seen much of the Vicodin of late.
