The "-ough" words ! always a problem. I once heard Bill Bryson giving a talk at the Edinburgh (Edin-burrah) Festival. (Americans pronounce it "Edin-bro") Bill pointed out to his audience that Scots pronounce it "Ednbr" (Eden- brr). I hope my atteps at phonetics are OK.

Bill Bryson is one of my favourite writers! His "Mother Tongue" is great! I also read "Notes from a Small Island" and even translated some part of it into Russian. The part that I love most of all is the beginning of the book, it is hilariously funny! He has such a great love to Great Britain! I was quite surprised to learn that he is American.

I'm 99% sure he is American, but Canadian might be a possibility.
