I've a 15,000 word chapter to have a draft completed by the 10th/ 11th September, so far it's going a little too slowly for my liking. I'm curious to hear what ways others get into their writing and how they make it move along quicker. I'm trying the write c.1,500 words per day, as then I'll get to the word limit and have time to tweak it around ( Read more... )

Sometimes just writing - on paper, on the screen, wherever - just to get something down without worrying about getting it organised or right.

Best way I've recently found is, a) Work on a computer that has no internet connection, or b) disconnect your computer from the internet (or even move it away from any wifi reception).
It's a trick for me that makes me finally get down to it.

Good luck!

I'm all about plan and structure. Outline becomes skeleton becomes body, gets cut up, jiggled about and stitched back together.

Course, I'm producing about 1/10th of what you have too.

Other than that, I require a constant stream of tea, appropriate music and the Leechblock extension for firefox to stop me checking facebook/lj/twitter every 5 minutes.

Your dissertation was *what*?!
Awesome!

My ideas? Get *something* down. Anything. Get some words out there, and then you'll have something you can play with.
Libraries are good. Tea is good.

Ah - British Library cafe. Didn't spot that. I approve wholeheartedly :D
And deadlines are *very* useful. Maybe set your own so they're not too real and scary? And know that you'll do something fun after them.

-target number of words a day tends to work well for me as well
-no matter how little time is left, must have some time off, sleep, eat, wash, etc.
-try to think in terms of blocks of ideas and logical sections because that really helps keep the structure when you are getting something done quickly (i tend to spill my brain in a tumble of nonsense otherwise)
-lots of chocolate biscuits
