I know many people that have meat as a small percentage of their diets but when visiting Alberta, make sure they have Alberta beef. It's so good. Say what you will about their politics and all but their beef is good.

It's funny visiting Calgary. You go to someone's place for supper and each person is given a 5cm thick steak that covers their plate. Couldn't do it everyday but once in a awhile is nice.

Perhaps cooking with step-mom would be a learning experience and fun too
