(I didn't read most of the post, cause I haven't seen the movie yet...)

Aren't Japanese movie theatres also ridiculously expensive, even compared to the American ones? Or is that misinformation?

Well, they used to be. American theatres are catching up rather quickly. But the general admissions (daytime) price to a Japanese movie is about 1700 yen. So, I think there's only a 5-7 dollar difference after conversion. However, if you go late at night, then the price drops to 1000 yen. And on some days, they might have a women's night or a special discount night or day when you can see a movie for cheap. The concession stand prices are about the same as in an American theatre (absurd), but maybe a dollar cheaper.
Also, the theatres hand out discount coupons at local companies or work places that you can use. They drop them off at the schools once a month. You can use those to take the edge off of the price, too. It's not too bad, and if you time it right or have a good discount, you can see movies for about the same price as in America.
