Darling, what is wrong? I mean besides what you saw or what you are thinking about. I have been there before and I have cried so many times at those sights. Crying or getting upset doesn't help the people we see. What we do helps them. I have been volunteering this summer. I know, some day, you will do the same when you can for this world. Like how you pick trash up, that helps. it's small, but it helps a great deal. You know you can tell me anything. I am here to listen. I always am thats what friends are for.
Just remember that I love you and I miss you terribly.

Last week on my way to the theatre a homeless man asked me for bus fare because he had fallen and hurt his ankle so he couldn't walk. I was dubious - not because I didn't believe him, but because I was downtown by myself and in a hurry. He saw the doubt on my face I guess and lifted his pant leg to show me a very filthy, bleeding, swollen, grainy ankle. I gave him $2... it was all I had at the time... then when he asked me for more I cried because I didn't have anything else to give with me.
I think feeling the urge to cry in situations like that is a good thing. It shows that at least there are some people in this world who still care. I'm sorry you are plagued with the pain that comes with empathy, but it proves you are a good person.

i'd say you prove to be a good person, too. thank you for sharing that story. i am glad there are people like you to back me up and tell me that empathy is not going to kill me, but rather help me be a better person.

It is your sympathy for the hurt that keeps you unselfish. There is always two views to look at the situation, and you're looking at them both. From my point of view, you aren't being selfish or taking much for granted because you are aware of the people who are hurting and you feel for them. Keep trying to make the world a better place; you have a lot of people backing you up, me included.
