The Impossible Dream
by Renata Lord (

I almost told her the truth.
You should have seen us, the Federation diplomat and the Starfleet captain. The lady was even lovelier than I remembered: No longer the blushing bride, the years had given her a measured glow, half softness and all parts steel. As for me, well, I had learned to smile a lot ever since I made the officer rank.
She asked me to watch after her baby boy, your son. The matter was presented to me as a personal favor for an old acquaintance. She didn’t mention your name, but I could hear it reverberating in every word, every pause.
I said yes, of course. This was the woman whom you openly loved, and she had every right to expect no other answer. Strangely enough, I was at peace with this. Looking at her on the video screen, I no longer felt like I was being confronted with the person who, with a bright smile, made you slip away from my grasp.
Until that incident at the bar, I had mostly forgotten you. Twenty-five years is a long time, long enough for me to accept that I had lost you twice over-first to her, then to the unfathomable silence of space. When she thanked me, for a fleeting moment I had the urge to open up to her, to say that she and I shared more than she'd ever imagined.
I caught myself before the words could form, however, and only told her that it was my pleasure to watch your son grow into the man he was destined to be.
After the transmission ended, for the first time in a long while, I thought of you. More than the way you said my name and the outline of your body in the darkness, I thought of your face, eyes half-closed and oddly calm; of your fingers digging into my arms and leaving marks there; of the way I believed that nothing could come between you and I, because I was too young to know anything otherwise.
She can keep her George Kirk, the husband and the hero. As for me, I have decided I should remember you as I first found you, free of the pains that were to follow. In the end, I couldn’t bring myself to renounce or tarnish my dreams. And, as impossible as it was, you had been my dream.
