Character name: Rebecca Crane
Fandom: Assassin's Creed
Timeline: During the team's stay in Monteriggioni; Late September 2012 (Brotherhood)
Age: 27
~*Magical*~ abilities and strengths: Assassin... sort of... Mostly computer skillz. She can kill if she needs to, but she doesn't like it, and she doesn't take it lightly.
How would they use their abilities?: For good and for awesome. Also, dismantling and reprogramming Guides
Appearance:
The shortest of the Assassin crew in 2012, Rebecca is compact, lean, and strong. A former hobbyist in extreme sports--her favorite being snowboarding--she's kept her body toned despite taking up more sedentary hobbies. Her hair is short and boyish, even punkish, more functional than intentionally stylish now that she's pretty much sequestered. Standard attire for her is a form-fitting jumpsuit, reminiscent of her sportier days, and a pair of headphones. Half of that is her intense attachment to her iPod; the other part is that thing we all do in coffee shops. Headphones on? Nobody bugs you. Her digital watch is probably way more advanced than anything I'll ever own. In addition to these, she's got standard pockets, pouches, and padding attached to her suit. She's an Assassin, after all!
Background/Personality:
Not much is known about where Rebecca came from. She's American, that's for sure, but she pretty deliberately keeps her history under wraps. What we do know--and this wasn't even easily given--is that she was dating an electronics engineer, and then she wasn't. She subsequently said she was joking. but noted that death isn't funny when it's happening in front of you. There's likely a measure of truth to this, as Rebecca is generally truthful and blunt.
It's also stated that she was old friends with Lucy Stillman, thought they'd been separated for the better part of seven years while Lucy was held by Abstergo. Originally an extreme sports enthusiast, an injury put her out of action for a while; Rebecca discovered (possibly through that boyfriend) that she had both a passion and talent for electronics and coding. She finds it exciting and challenging, and took on the task of creating a copy of Abstergo's memory extracting and processing machine, the Animus--one of her proudest accomplishments. ...That's saying something. She's pretty proud of her accomplishments in technology, overall.
Her version of the Animus, called "2.0" or "Baby", is what leads Desmond (that's the protag) through the memories of Ezio Auditore da Firenze, and thus leads the heroes to the prize they seek. Through all of this, Rebecca watches carefully over the progress, and dissects and observes the memories along with the rest of the Assassin group. While Desmond is in the Animus, she also enthusiastically patches in helpful information, such as locations of interest and repaired memories that were previously corrupted. Her accidental integration of the previous test subject's memories led the group to discover things they probably never wanted to know about the Templars. She likely tested the 2.0 on herself, as she states that her ancestors were boring compared to Desmond's.
As for her history with the Assassins: Rebecca wasn't born into the Assassin lineage, but was rather recruited for her technical prowess. She, in turn, recruited Shaun by saving his life. She has many skills of the Assassins, and obviously has the ability to kill (in the title), but she doesn't have the free-running or climbing skills the Desmond develops through the Animus.
Despite all the things she's been through, Rebecca is the most upbeat of the crew. She works together with the others to maintain a small sense of normalcy despite being in hiding. There are regular grocery runs, new music downloads, even shenanigans that she's quick to take sides in. She's a toe-to-toe affectionate foil to the sarcastic and dry-humored Shaun; she's gal pals with Lucy; and she's careful to look out for Desmond. She takes great pains to monitor Desmond's progress and his condition in the Animus 2.0, eager to avoid a repeat of the previous subject's breakdown--though it was at the hands of Abstergo, and not Rebecca. Of the crew, she's also the most childish (so says Shaun).
A collection of
e-mails between herself and the team reveal more closely the depth and scope of her personality. She's the techie of the group, the realist, and the overachieving kid sister. She's laid-back but blunt, the essential voice of technical reason and a vigilant defender of the material the crew has obtained, as well as the protector of their greatest asset: the Animus 2.0.
Have you read up on how the game works?: FLAMINGFERRET? That's hilarious. Rebecca won't be stealing or mooching, but she will work her fanny off!
1st person sample:
[There's the small sound of feedback over the network, and as the video comes into clear view, a woman settles back, screwdriver in hand.]
No kidding? It's going through, right?
[She gives the viewers a little half-salute.] So I figured out how to change the encryption. Hope this is going through. It's pretty intuitive, but it actually started yelling at me when I was putting it back together. Funny stuff, the OS is actually pretty sensitive to what's going on around it. I'm thinking of playing around with installing voice recognition functionality on it, that way you can lock it up and not get those fake job posts when some jerk takes your Guide.
Still working on the glitch on job selection, though. When I tried to run my new algorithm for checking a post before submission, it signed me up for six jobs. Sorry to my betas. Gotta get that ironed out.
3rd person sample:
The short-haired girl with the headphones on, idly poking at her Guide, might have looked totally natural in the cafe, but the truth was that she was on edge. She felt like she'd been followed for days, got the sense someone might've been watching her, maybe even trying to intercept the signal from her Guide.
Paranoia. She dismissed it as the paranoia of being alone, not knowing what had really happened to her fellow Assassins. Still, the whole Purist thing hit too close to home for Rebecca. To be opposed, but not really know who was opposing you was the worst situation you could be in. You couldn't get an advantage, and no matter how much data you gather and how much you explore, if you're outnumbered, you're screwed. On the Thor, there was nowhere to hide, nowhere to strike from or make a base of operations that wasn't way too easy to infiltrate.
She'd been making do, though, networking very quietly, letting her identity be hidden by her interests. Hell, she'd even done a little rock wall climbing and checked out a mountainous planet just for nostalgia's sake. It wasn't enough to completely reassure her, though. She always glanced over her shoulder, scrutinizing every glance that lingered a bit too long, returning a knowing smile.
It didn't hurt to be overly cautious, did it?
Questions?: Can she bring Baby with? Please please? She spent so much time rebuilding the Animus.
Did you put your characters name and fandom in the subject: Will do~ o7
