Another part of the set...This one comes shortly after "Worried" and "Listless."
Determined
“So you’re saying…He could go offline without some kind of bond?”
“That’s exactly what I’m saying. He’s not built to survive on his own for long. I’m amazed he’s still alive, actually.”
“And there’s no other way…?”
“I don’t believe so; no.”
“So that means…”
The hesitation was clear. Bumblebee didn’t want it. Scorponok felt his spark sink.
He never should have heard that conversation.
But he knew it all already. He was living it, after all.
Scorponok had known all along that he was dying. He had felt his life force ebbing away the second Blackout offlined and knew it was only a matter of time. He knew that he wasn’t programmed for a life unconnected to some one else’s; he had known that it was imperative he establish a link with some one new. The problem didn’t lie there, within ignorance…It lay in the fact that it took so long for any one else to figure it out.
There had been very few candidates for the position of host. The insects were right out; he didn’t like either of them much. He didn’t trust the red one and the green one…could hardly take care of himself. The Autobot was just that -- An Autobot. And other than that…
Nothing.
But Scorponok knew he had to choose. He had to pick one of them or he would offline.
He chose the Autobot.
Bumblebee turned out to be a wonderful choice. He wanted what was best for Scorponok, even though he wasn’t sure how to give it to him. He was energetic and outspoken and didn’t treat Scorponok like he didn’t understand things.
But he had trouble understanding the scorpion’s fragmented speech, and therein lay the problem.
Scorponok had been trying to tell them. He had been trying desperately to tell them that he needed to link with Bumblebee, or he wouldn’t survive. It hadn’t been working; they didn’t understand.
And now…That conversation and the tone of Bumblebee’s voice…
Scorponok knew the only thing left to do was try harder.
