[Background] Yukiko Amagi's family has owned a famous
ryokan - a Japanese inn - in the town of Yasoinaba for generations, and as the Amagis' only daughter, Yukiko has long been expected to inherit the role of its manager once she'd come of age. The expectations placed on Yukiko by her family and the staff of the inn have been a source of stress for her ever since she was a young girl. In fact, it was how she met her closest friend, Chie Satonaka - Yukiko had wanted to adopt a stray dog, but had been forbidden to bring the animal anywhere inside the inn. Since her parents wouldn't let her keep it, a distraught Yukiko ran away from home with the puppy, which was where she met a girl her age - Chie.
Chie tried to cheer the girl up by doing everything she could to make her laugh ... and it worked. Yukiko let Chie take the puppy home with her to take care of it, and the two became close friends. As they grew up together and went to school together, Yukiko would come to rely on Chie as someone she trusted absolutely ... she saw the girl as her Prince. In some ways, she was jealous of Chie - the girl's strength, her energetic nature, and that she had a freedom to choose her way in life that Yukiko had never been offered.
Yukiko grew up, still training hard to become the next manager of her family's inn. Because of said obligation, she would often go home quickly after school - or, when necessary, she would even stay home from school entirely to help take care of the inn. She struggled under the responsibility and stress, though maintained a calm, elegant facade, and let no trace of her resentment show through.
This would come to a head when a new student - Souji Seta - came to Yasoinaba and joined Yukiko and Chie at Yasogami high school. Around this time, a TV newscaster, Mayumi Yamano, had her affair with a politician revealed, and sought to escape the public eye by retreating to Inaba, and stayed in the Amagi Inn. However, she suddenly disappeared - and in the ensuing chaos, Yukiko's stress levels were higher than ever before ... particularly once the woman's body was discovered by a girl named Saki Konishi. It only got worse once Saki Konishi herself disappeared and was found dead.
The Amagis were suspects in the murder case, since the police had very few leads to go on other than that Ms. Yamano had stayed in their inn before her death. Souji, Chie, and Yousuke Hanamura would eventually see Yukiko appear on the mysterious Midnight Channel ... as had Ms. Yamano and Saki-senpai before her. Yukiko, however, had no idea that the three were concerned about her as she stayed home from school to work at the inn, until Chie finally got in touch with her by telephoning the inn itself instead of Yukiko's cell phone.
That night, however, Yukiko would end up kidnapped by a mysteeeeeeerious person and thrown into the Midnight Channel ... where her Shadow, now dressed as a typical princess, announced to everyone watching that she was looking for some "hot studs" and waiting for her own Prince Charming. Souji, Chie, and Yousuke ventured into the Midnight Channel in order to rescue her, and arrived as she was confronting her Shadow in the castle created by her heart.
The Shadow Yukiko acts disgusted at the idea of inheriting the family inn, and upon the trio's arrival (plus Teddie), announces that three princes have come to save her. Specifically, she names Chie as her Prince Charming, asking that she take her far, far away so that she wouldn't have to inherit the inn as her family wants her to. Yukiko, as most people do when confronted by their Shadows, claims that it isn't what she wants, and that her other self isn't her - which naturally causes the Shadow to morph into a gigantic creature that resembles a caged bird: Yukiko's desire to be able to choose her own path instead of being shackled to her parents' choice for her, and her feeling trapped by constantly having to rely on Chie for support.
After the party defeats Yukiko's Shadow, she confronts it and admits that what the being has been saying is actually true, and are her real feelings - upon which the shadow transforms into Yukiko's Persona, Konohana Sakuya. Upon leaving the Midnight Channel, Yukiko resolves to be a more outgoing person, one whom people can rely on, instead of her having to rely on other people for support. She becomes the fourth member of the Investigation Team (fifth including Teddie), and joins them in tracking down the culprits responsible for throwing people into the Midnight Channel.
In her interactions with the protagonist, Souji Seta, Yukiko reveals that she intends to leave Inaba after graduation, and has chosen to not inherit the inn as planned. She begins studying for a job license, expressing her desire to become an interior decorator. Yukiko is also determined to become self-sufficient, wanting to learn how to cook ... which is an uphill battle for her, despite the help of the staff of the Amagi Inn.
She tells the staff of the inn that she's learning to cook for a boy, and their interest in her "boyfriend" - plus their willingness to teach her how to cook even on their breaks - eventually makes Yukiko realize how much they care about her... not as the heiress of the inn, but as a girl. The inn is her home, and the people there are all but family to her. When tabloid reporters snoop around and harass the inn and its staff over the murder of Mayumi Yamano, Yukiko gets angry and threatens them, driving them away - and decides not to leave, after all. It wasn't so much the idea of taking over the inn that made her uncomfortable; her problem was that she never felt like she had a choice. Once she chooses to stay with the inn, she is much happier with the idea.
Yukiko accompanies the rest of the Investigation Team in saving others from the Midnight Channel like Kanji Tatsumi, Rise Kujikawa, and Naoto Shirogane ... and also doing things like swimming in the hot springs at the Amagi Inn, entering pageants, and playing King's Game at a local club. But mainly she's just trying to juggle real life and school with tracking down the one behind the Midnight Channel murders.
[Personality] Yukiko is normally very quiet and introverted, very elegant and withdrawn as a result of her upbringing with the expectation that she would be the manager of the Amagi Inn - in many respects, she was raised with the expectations and mannerisms of a traditional princess. This isn't a complete facade, either - it is a genuine facet of who she is. However, it's by no means all she is - after her rescue from the Midnight Channel, Yukiko displays a more extroverted, outgoing side to the members of the Investigation Team (well, to Yosuke and Souji, anyway - Chie already knew about it).
Yukiko is more cheerful in general after her ordeal in the Midnight Channel - and is more resolved to be someone who isn't just caged in all the time, but someone who can be out on her own. She is prone to little laughing fits, particularly over bad jokes and puns (though some of Teddie's puns are too awful even for her).
She is a very hard worker, as demonstrated multiple times - first, with her dedication to her family's inn. Second, with her devotion to her schoolwork (her grades are frequently near the top off the class). Third, with her determination to become self-sufficient ... both in learning how to cook, and her studying to get a job license. Whatever she's determined to do, she'll work very diligently in accomplishing it.
Due to her intense upbringing and spending most of her time either on her studies or learning to manage the inn, Yukiko can sometimes be a bit clueless when it comes to interacting with other people, and occasionally misinterprets things - for example, she slapped Yosuke for asking for "private lessons," even when he was legitimately asking her to help him study for exams. She also seems unaware that many people are attracted to her due to her quiet grace and beauty - though one might argue that this would be because they never told her, due to her best friend being rather overprotective (and a fan of kung fu movies).
Yukiko, too, shows a fierce protective streak when the tabloid reporters are insulting the staff of her family's inn, whom she cares for dearly - as well as an ability to thick quickly on her feet in threatening them and driving them away. Indeed, threatening people that Yukiko loves is a quick way to end up on her bad side. She's also very competitive, as seen when Rise Kujikawa suggests that she and Chie couldn't make omelettes for Souji's cousin, Nanako Dojima.
Yukiko is a rather affectionate and bubbly drunk.
[Specialties/Abilities] Yukiko can summon the persona
Konohana Sakuya of The Priestess Arcanum (upgraded into
Amaterasu at the end of her Social Link), though not here in Somarium - that's limited solely to the world inside the TV. Beyond that, she's not very good at fighting, though she can use a pair of fans in combat if she needs to. Instead, her abilities are much more non-combat-oriented: For one, she's rather smart, good at thinking on her feet, and a very hard worker with training at managing an inn - so she's fairly good with interacting with people in that sort of way.
While her cooking is still not very good, she's much better now than how she was when she started. To be fair, it would be hard to be worse than when she started.
[Affection] Uh, depends on the character. For people she's close to - Chie, other members of the Investigation Team - she's a lot more comfortable with affectionate stuff, physical contact. No, Yosuke, that doesn't mean you can try anything. Hugs and the like. If she doesn't know you, she'll likely be a lot more distant, and a lot less willing to be affectionate ... but once she gets to know someone, that might change. Also, if she's drunk, she is very affectionate. Other than alcohol, getting her to actually kiss anybody (that isn't Souji?? or Chie) will require lots and lots of work.
[Fighting] Without her Persona, Yukiko's not very good at fighting. Well, she can fight a bit with fans ... somehow. She's much more likely to try and defuse a fight than to, y'know, fight back or anything.
[Other Facts] Uh, can't think of anything? I already mentioned LACY UNMENTIONABLES, right??
