"Oh, Cookie, you're just such a mischievous little puppy, do you know that?"

A very familiar voice - one that he thought he had forgotten - caught Donghae's attention while he was walking through the park near the dorms. A soft bark followed that question, and he felt even more compelled to just take a look at the owner of the voice. When she came into plain sight, Donghae reflexively hid behind the thick foliage upon recognising her.

Her identity was unmistakable. Even though it had been years since he had last seen her, it wasn't hard for him to be able to identify her. Not when she hadn't changed a bit. Not when he could remember her delicate features by heart. The exact same smile that he loved so much still graced her face, and at that particular moment, he realised just how much he missed her. The memories have been repressed so far behind in his mind for all this while, but one smile of hers was adequate to bring it all back out.

Donghae ignored the dull pain that was grappling at his heart as he watched her every move. She gently picked up the little puppy that was trying to run away once again, before brushing her nose playfully with the puppy's own nose. A melodious laugh came from her direction when the puppy stuck out its tongue and licked her face, showing its affection towards her.

However, another voice approached the girl moments later, causing Donghae to shrink further into the shadows. His breath hitched a little as the man swooped down to pull her into a soft kiss, and he tried his best to choke back all the regretful feelings that started to take over his senses. Unable to withstand the immense amount of affection that he could feel between her and the other man, Donghae quietly took his leave without even announcing his presence to the one person that mattered the most.

Even though he felt insanely jealous of the man, he couldn't blame anyone but himself for the feelings. It was after all his fault for taking things for granted, thinking that she would hang around forever even without him making the move and actually ask her to stay with him. He hated the fact that he had failed to notice her increasing reluctance to be there without any reassurances from his part, and that he wasn't aware of her changing feelings. True, she was in love with him at one point of time and vice versa. However, she eventually got tired of him for not doing anything at all.

And one day, she left with tears in her eyes after venting her frustrations at him. Donghae had not seen her ever since, nor did he have the chance to explain himself or set things straight between them. His lack of actions broke not one, but two hearts at the same time. He knew that everything would remain as regrets in his mind for God-knows-how-long, but this was for the best.

He couldn't bring himself to destroy the happiness that had finally found her.

He kept telling himself that he couldn't be so selfish.

No, not even if he still loved her dearly.
