The man looked on in amusement as his friend threw his phone in a frustrated manner onto the empty seat next to him. He had a look of disgust on his face, which told Donghae that he must have read something undesirable in the text message he had just received. It had been occurring very frequently over the past few weeks, ever since he had started with his newest relationship.
“Girl getting on your nerves again?” Donghae mused, knowing how Hyukjae didn’t really like his current girlfriend because of the constant text messaging. Listening to his group member talk about this girl made him wonder why on earth he dated her in the first place. Nevertheless, he kept quiet about his thoughts, deciding not to discuss about it. It was his choice after all.
“As usual. I can’t understand which part of ‘do not send me a text message when I’m not at classes’ that she does not get,” Hyukjae mumbled miserably, rubbing the bridge of his nose.
“And I don’t understand why you can’t just switch off your phone whenever you’re attending schedules. I mean this isn’t the first time you’re experiencing such a thing, you know,” Jongwoon stated as-a-matter-of-factly from behind of Hyukjae, before sliding onto the space next to the younger male.
“Yesungie hyung has a point,” Sungmin, whom had been resting his eyes next to Donghae, spoke up at that. The younger male happily snuggled up to Sungmin when he realised that the latter can be disturbed for now.
Hyukjae frowned at his friends. “Then how do you expect that the managers and my parents should contact me?” he asked, moving to mute his phone when it started ringing again. He had a designated ringtone for his girlfriends, knowing full well when to cancel calls when he didn’t want to answer them.
“No one asked you to give her your most frequently used number, Hyukkie,” Heechul snorted, waving his other phone at the younger man. “Learn from the master.”
“You’re different, Heechul hyung. You can flirt with everyone else and get away with it without anyone even noticing,” the lead vocalist of the group teased back. He stilled and sank into his seat when the older man glared at him with a dangerous gleam in his eyes.
“What is she bothering you about this time?” Jungsoo, who had heard all of their conversations while his makeup was being done, walked over and joined the group in the middle of the waiting room.
Although he wasn’t much of a person who would comment too much about the other members’ relationships, the Super Junior leader wasn’t all that happy with Hyukjae’s current relationship. He didn’t have a problem with him dating multiple girls as long as he didn’t do something stupid, but at least the other girlfriends were understanding enough to not bother the dancer until the clock strikes eight at night.
This girlfriend, on the contrary, was quite a handful. She even managed to get the other boys’ numbers somehow, and disturbed them whenever Hyukjae ignored her calls or messages. Of course, among all of them, Jungsoo was the one who was the most annoyed with her behaviour. The girl would always ring him up in the middle of the night asking for Hyukjae, even though Jungsoo wasn’t staying at the dorms with the rest of the members.
“She wants to meet up with me right now,” he made a face, and the other boys who were around him stared at Hyukjae oddly.
“Like immediately right now?” Donghae clarified, eyebrows quirked.
“Yes, immediately. I don’t even know what she wants with me this time. I even made sure to tell her in advance that today was off-limits because we have a full schedule today,” his friend sighed, burying his face into the pillow which he managed to wrestle away from Jongwoon. The latter was hogging way too many for his own good.
“Sounds like a very disgruntled girlfriend to me,” Youngwoon commented from a distance away, surprising everyone. They had initially thought that the man wasn’t able to tune in to their conversation over the sound of the hairdryer blowing into his ears. Apparently they thought wrong. “How the hell did you manage to hook up with someone like that to begin with?” he asked again.
“Trust me, I’ve been asking myself the same question every single day,” came another muffled lamentation. “I must have been out of my mind when I agreed.”
Siwon nodded in agreement with the latter statement. “You seriously must have been disillusioned or something back then,” he said, earning surprised gasps from the rest of the boys. Out of all the members, they would have expected for the man with many gestures to keep mum about his opinions. It must have been really unbearable if even Siwon had something to say about Hyukjae’s girlfriend.
“I know I’m in no position to say this, but I’m actually hoping that you’ll break up with that Younghwa girl as soon as possible,” Youngwoon scoffed again. “If I ever hear her voice through my phone one more time, I swear I’m not going to hold back with the colourful language.”
“It’s Hwayoung, hyung,” Hyukjae corrected him disinterestedly. “Honestly, I don’t really care what you guys want to say to her when she rings you up. I’m looking for ways to break up with her myself. It’d be much appreciated if you guys could speed up the process of getting her off my back.”
“Hyung, you must be seriously annoyed with your girlfriend,” Ryeowook spoke up next, with an astonished tone. To him, it was a rare occasion to hear Hyukjae complaining about the girls from university that he would date. They would almost always part on a peaceful note, but it seems that this Hwayoung person was driving Hyukjae up the wall this time.
“You really have no idea,” the person in question commented again. He wanted to describe more about his dilemma, but the stage director happened to have walked in at that particular moment and told them their cue was up. Abandoning his phone in the waiting room, Hyukjae quickly got up with the rest of his group members and proceeded for their filming session.

She was seated on the freshly-cut grass of the wide lawn in front of the university’s main building, hugging her prized notebook as she enjoyed the cooling autumn weather. It had been a while since she was able to escape the confines of the library and away from the taunting pages of her textbooks. It was certainly a pleasure to be able to take a breather, as her classes were easier to understand, now that she had gotten a hang of business-related terminologies.
Unfortunately, Seohyeon couldn’t really say that her interest for Business and Marketing had increased over the two months she had been attending classes. She remained as bored as she could ever be for each successive lesson, none of it really catching her attention. Nevertheless, she was still rather thankful that at least some of her classmates were beginning to talk to her, and some of them were even kind enough to extend a helping hand to her in terms of explaining what was going on in class. At least she didn’t remain clueless about everything.
That all took a backseat when she held her notebook, however. Seohyeon still found it amazing that she could be lost in her own world whenever she turns the pages over and continues where she had left off previously. It was the one place where she could seek solace from the pressures of life, ever since she had discovered the beauty of writing when she was in her first year of high school.
Although she would not admit that she was a good writer, she still loved to write. There were plenty of people who have told her that it was a form of escapism, as though she was merely running away from problems instead of facing them head on, Seohyeon didn’t really care. It was a hobby, and she would prefer it if people would just keep their noses out of what she loved to do.
Just as she was about to jot down some lines which she thought were perfect for the newest piece she was working on, the slight rustling of the grass next to her, accompanied by a dark shadow casted over the pristine pages of her notebook made Seohyeon look up. She smiled in amusement when she recognised who it was standing there, and scooted over slightly to make some space for the person whom automatically claimed the spot next to her.
“How rare of you to actually be seen out in the open,” the man teased, causing Seohyeon to let out a chuckle.
“Well, you’re never really around during the times when I would be wandering around the university compounds, Shin-il-sshi,” she pointed out, flipping her notebook to a close before her newfound acquaintance managed to take a peek at the pages.
Seohyeon didn’t really know why, but she wasn’t really comfortable with the idea of having anyone in her university - apart from Min-ae - knowing about her love for writing. There was an apprehension within her, thinking that the others wouldn’t understand why she liked to make up things that probably only happened in her mind. Above all, she really didn’t want them to bring up the question why she wasn’t taking up a creative writing course instead.
“I haven’t seen you for only a couple of days, but your tongue is still as sharp as ever, I see,” he grinned boyishly, leaning backwards and supported the weight of his body with his arms.
“I didn’t know that sharp tongues would turn blunt in the matter of days, though,” Seohyeon commented innocently, laughing again when he flashed a pout in her direction.
It was entertaining to be involved in a conversation with Shin-il, as she had learned over the few weeks since she had met him. Although they would always pass such snide comments at each other most of the time, it was definitely interesting because neither of them would get offended by the other’s words. They knew that it was all done in good humour, so no one would take it to heart.
“Ouch, babe, really now? Don’t you think you should give me a chance to slot the last word in sometimes?” he made an exasperated face at her, pressing a palm over his chest in mock hurt. “Also, when will you drop the honorific? Do you intend to keep me at an arm’s length for as long as you can?”
Seohyeon smiled wryly at that, putting on a contemplative expression as she considered his requests. “Honestly, you’d have to depend on your own abilities to win in an argument,” she grinned cheekily when she had thought things through. “And hmm, I’ve been taught to be respectful to others all my life. Unless we have a special relationship, I would either have to call you Shin-il-sshi, or Shin-il sunbae. Which one would you prefer?”
Shin-il tapped his chin at the prospects, a mischievous grin spreading on his face. “Shin-il-sshi is too formal, and I hate it when people call me sunbae. It just sounds too old. So I guess I’ll have bank on you having a special relationship with me?” he said suggestively, pressing slightly closer towards Seohyeon.
The Business and Marketing freshman turned a bright shade of red at the blatant taunting, suddenly losing all composure to reply to him coolly. If she had one weakness, it was her being completely defenceless against good looking guys who could sweet talk their way into her heart. Nevertheless, Seohyeon thanked the heavens above for sending her a saviour - regardless of who it was - when someone cleared their throat from behind and sent both her and Shin-il jumping slightly away from each other.
Much to her relief, it was her best friend. That was when Seohyeon suddenly remembered that she was supposed to meet Min-ae at this particular location. She wasted no time in bouncing over to the blonde girl and linked their arms together.
“Min-ae! What took you so long? I almost forgot that you were going to be here!” the shorter girl greeted brightly, earning an odd look from her friend. Seohyeon narrowed her eyes a little when she realised that Min-ae was feeling confused about her actions, silently telling her to play along. Thankfully, Min-ae knew her well enough to understand what she was trying to do.
“I’m sorry, Hyeon, but I was held back by that whiny lecturer who had too much to complain about my assignment,” Min-ae exclaimed exasperatedly, though she turned around and looked at Shin-il who had been observing them quietly for the first time that afternoon moments later. “Oh, is this your classmate?” she asked.
Seohyeon laughed at her query, knowing full well that Min-ae was just joking around. Of course the blonde knew who she was with, considering the fact that she would fill her friend in on her daily experiences while they were trying to drift to sleep. Min-ae probably didn’t even need to know how Shin-il looked like to be able to guess his identity.
“Let me introduce you. This is Yoon Shin-il. He’s the sophomore from your faculty that I told you about,” she first said to her friend, only to be interrupted by the man.
“Oh, this is a surprise. You were talking about me to your friend?” he mused, only to be duly ignored by Seohyeon whom rolled her eyes at him.
“And Shin-il-sshi, this is my best friend, Choi Min-ae. We’ve known each other since our high school days,” she then introduced, looking on as they exchanged a brief handshake.
“Nice to meet you, Min-ae-sshi,” he bowed slightly, a charming smile lingering on his lips.
The girl seem to be unfazed by the blatant display of his charm, however, as she nodded curtly in response. “Likewise,” she said bluntly, only to turn to her friend again a split second later. “Anyway, Seohyeon, don’t you think we should leave for the mall now? Didn’t you say the bookshop would be closing earlier today?”
Seohyeon gasped sharply at the reminder. “Oh, right! I have to get my book today, too!” she exclaimed. “I’m sorry, Shin-il-sshi, but I really can’t stay to talk. I’ll go ahead first so that I can grab my booklist, Min-ae. See you at the main entrance in ten!”
Min-ae could barely come up a response to her friend, whom dashed off almost immediately in the general direction of the girls’ dorms. However, she lingered around a little longer, knowing full well that Shin-il was still there. As she had suspected, he was looking at her expectantly when she turned around.
“So, you’re the infamous Yoon Shin-il,” she smiled, though it didn’t quite reach her eyes.
“Yes, indeed I am. Judging by your words, I’m sure you’ve been hearing plenty of stories about me running around. Though I suppose you’re not one of those girls who are dying to gain access into my dorm room, are you?” he replied, an equally mirthless smile playing on his lips. Something in her intonation made Shin-il feel that he should be cautious around this woman. He could sense that she wasn’t someone whom he should mess around with. Then again, he had no interest in doing so either.
“You’re right; I’m not remotely interested in that.”
“So what do you want with me?” he shot without an ounce of hesitation, the same smile still plastered on his expressions.
“Stay away from Seohyeon. You mess with her, you mess with me,” Min-ae warned scathingly. If anything, she was glad that they saw eye-to-eye that they had absolutely no interest in the other. At least it would make their dealings short and sweet.
“Fine by me. Let’s see who prevails in the end,” he shrugged, looking on in amusement as Min-ae glared at him before stomping off to meet her friend and the person he had his eyes set on. His university life was just going to get even more interesting than ever.
