Hyukjae leaned backwards in alarm when he noticed that something was sailing through the air from the corner of his eyes, holding his arms out just in time to catch the thick book that slammed directly into his open palms. Several silent curses escaped his lips as he shook his hands in the air, trying to dissipate the pain that shot through his senses.

When the last of the pain was gone, his head snapped in the other man’s direction, shooting him the most murderous glare he could muster. “What was that for, Shin-il? Are you trying to kill me, or worse, damage my face?” he exclaimed exasperatedly, propping himself up on the bed as he did so.

Hyukjae abandoned the book on the bed next to him as he pressed himself against the wall and watched his friend closely, lest Shin-il tried to hurl something in his direction again. The latter had a knack of doing that whenever he was bored and Hyukjae was around, or when he was too lazy to walk across the room to hand Hyukjae something.

“It’s your fault for zoning out like that, Hyuk. I’ve been calling for your attention for ages,” Shin-il laughed. “Besides, I wouldn’t even think of killing you or leaving the smallest of scratches on your face. Your fans wouldn’t be happy at all,” he then added, shuddering playfully when he hinted about the consequences that would befall him.

“Yeah, didn’t think so,” Hyukjae smirked. He loved it when he had the advantage over Shin-il over certain things. “Thanks for the book, by the way.”

Shin-il waved him off lazily as he dribbled his basketball around the room and back to his own bed, before plopping down on the piece of furniture. He dangled a foot over the edge of the bed, and stepped on the ball which lay on the ground with it. “You should really get yourself a copy of that. I know I hardly ever use it so you can loan it for as long as you want, but honestly, you and I both know how much more you’re dependent on that to pass your exams.”

“And you know just how much time I spend in the university grounds to actually be able to pay a visit to the bookstore before it closes for the day,” the other man sighed exasperatedly as he blew his fringe out of his eyes. He made a mental note to get the stylist to trim it for him on his next schedule.

His friend made a face at the statement. “That’s true. The campus bookshop’s closing time is seriously a bitch,” he commented, remembering about the many times where their lecturers made it compulsory for them to buy certain books, but always failed to do so because their classes would end after the closing time of the bookshop. He was involved in many run-ins with his professors because of that.

“Yeah,” he agreed absentmindedly, his thoughts drifting somewhere else.

Shin-il seemed to have caught on to that, however, because he launched something soft at Hyukjae again in order to gain the latter’s attention. An annoyed grunt escaped the brown-haired man’s throat.

“What do you want with me, Shin? Stop being such a pain whenever the conversation ceases,” he snapped, tossing the unworn t-shirt back at his friend.

“You’re distracted,” he ignored Hyukjae’s words and stated as-a-matter-of-factly, challenging the latter to a stare-down match.

“I’m not! What makes you think I’m distracted?” came the protest. A deep frown was etched on Hyukjae’s expressions at this point of time.

“Fine with me if you refuse to admit anything,” Shin-il shrugged. “But anyway, you have to be careful with Hwayoung. I saw her tightly wrapped around another guy on campus when you weren’t around,” he warned, not feeling particularly reserved about hiding the fact from his friend. It was against his principles to not inform Hyukjae about the potential cheating that his girlfriend was doing behind his back.

Hyukjae unexpectedly let out a laugh. “I’m surprised that you haven’t actually done something to her yet,” he commented jokingly, referring to the times where he found out that Shin-il had been involved in a fair share of brawls with the other students.

They were all on his behalf, because Shin-il caught certain students ridiculing Hyukjae in a loud voice. Despite having told Shin-il that he wasn’t bothered by the negative comments, and how he should stay away from trouble (his disciplinary records were pretty much filled to the brim), his friend wouldn’t listen. Shin-il merely promised not to get involved in fights… if he could hold himself back.

“I don’t lay my hands on girls, unless for intimate purposes,” he casted a dark look at his friend, snickering when Hyukjae rolled his eyes at him for the sexual innuendo. “Besides, I’m only the informant. She’s your girl. What position am I in to do anything?”

“As gentlemanly as always, aren’t we now?” Hyukjae teased.

“Are you kidding? I’m nowhere as gentlemanly as you are,” Shin-il scoffed. “Knowing you, you wouldn’t lay a finger on Hwayoung even if she annoyed the hell out of you.”

“Whatever, Shin.”

The younger man quietly studied his friend’s expressions, feeling that he was slightly out of it. Hyukjae was usually feistier than this when retorting his remarks, but he was acting rather reserved and, as he had said previously, distracted. Something was bothering Hyukjae, and Shin-il was determined to get to the bottom of the matter.

“You don’t seem to be affected by the fact that your girl is seeing someone else behind you,” he therefore tested his friend, whom looked up questioningly at the statement thrown at him.

“Is there any particular reason why I should be?” Hyukjae replied as he hopped off the bed which was supposed to be his, casting a worried look at the dark sky outside the dorms before turning towards Shin-il. “Anyway, I think I better leave now. I don’t think it’s a good idea if I were to get caught in the rain. See you around, bro.”

“Yeah sure, see you when I see you,” he said, watching closely as his friend ambled out of the room with his eyes downcast. Hyukjae was definitely hiding something from him.

Seohyeon diligently penned down some notes in her notepad as she flipped through the pages of her textbook, determined to get at least some studying done within the time frame she had allocated for herself. It was a difficult task however; she found it hard to concentrate when her roommate was busy talking away behind her. It was mindboggling to Seohyeon as to how Min-ae could actually ramble off in such a manner while she was supposed to be revising on her studies as well.

Feeling curious, she glanced over her shoulder in the direction of Min-ae’s desk, and shook her head in amusement when she realised how the blonde was juggling with talking and studying at the same time. Of course, why should she be surprised that Min-ae had completely abandoned her books and had turned her attention onto the fashion magazine she had just purchased instead?

Realising that there was nothing she could do when Min-ae’s attention span had been completely exhausted, Seohyeon quietly returned to her books, deciding not to comment about it. However, the moment she picked up her pen again, the sound of her name being called effectively made her freeze mid-movement. She sheepishly turned around, wondering whether Min-ae caught on to the fact that she hadn’t been listening to the contents of the girl’s endless chattering.

“Seriously, I still can’t understand why do you actually like that Yoon Shin-il guy,” Min-ae exclaimed exasperatedly, making a face at her friend.

“I don’t like him, Min-ae! How many times do I have to repeat that?” she said, completely flustered. Somehow, her best friend didn’t seem to buy her reasoning that she didn’t have any romantic feelings for her senior. Well, at least she thinks she doesn’t. “I only think of him as a friend.”

“You certainly don’t act like you’re just friends,” the blonde snorted. “Friends don’t go on frequent dates or hang out alone in secluded spots on campus.”

“What date?” Seohyeon frowned, thinking that her friend was stretching things a little too far. “I don’t know about you, but I certainly don’t think those hang out sessions could be considered as dates, Min. Besides, he’s the one who comes looking for me. It’s not like I have a choice, you know.”

“Of course you do!” Min-ae commented in mock horror. “Do I have to teach you how to reject a guy?”

“You’re overreacting, Min. I know how to reject a guy when they get too close for comfort.”

“Really now? How many times have you been in a relationship since I’ve known you in high school?” the taller girl challenged. She pulled her chair across the room so that she could sit right next to Seohyeon and make sure that she doesn’t avoid her questions.

“Five?” Seohyeon replied gingerly, holding up an open palm as she did so. She vaguely wondered what her best friend was up to.

Min-ae nodded satisfactorily at the answer, knowing full well that her friend was telling the truth. She had been through all those break-ups with Seohyeon after all. The latter wasn’t someone who kept secrets from her, and she certainly hoped that being in university wouldn’t change that fact. “Well then, kindly enlighten me how many times you’ve been involved in a relationship that actually involves you being truly in love with the guy?” she continued. She noticed how Seohyeon’s expressions clearly fell at the question.

In the end, the girl with shoulder-lengthed hair heaved a sigh and threw her arms up in defeat. “None,” she admitted, groaning playfully as her friend smiled victoriously.

“There, you have your answer. Honestly, I don’t get why you can’t just say no whenever guys ask you out. It’s not like you’re going to hurt their pride badly if you do,” Min-ae informed her, shaking her head at her friend.

That was one quirk of her friend’s which she couldn’t wrap her head around since they were acquainted. Seohyeon’s boyfriends were usually the ones to initiate a break-up once they were bored with the relationship, yet the girl would not make a single negative comment about them. She would usually just smile and proceed to skirt around the question, never really answering them earnestly whenever Min-ae brought them up.

“I don’t understand why you’re so against me befriending Shin-il sunbae either,” Seohyeon shot back with an amused smile.

“I’m not against you befriending him, Hyeon. I just don’t like it when you get too close to him.”

Seohyeon laughed a little and patted her friend’s cheek, finding it cute that Min-ae was fretting so much over her. “Min, I’m 21. I know how to take good care of myself, so don’t worry about me. You’re starting to sound like a jealous and possessive boyfriend,” she giggled.

Min-ae flashed a pout at her roommate, watching intently as the latter started shoving her favourite notebook and a pen into her bag. “Fine, if you say so. But you better tell me if anything major goes on, or I won’t forgive you,” she finally sighed. “Where are you headed to?”

“Out?” Seohyeon said as though it was the most obvious thing in the world. “I don’t think I can force any of those horrid terms into my head any longer, so I’m going out to take a breather.”

“In this weather?” her friend frowned, shooting a weird look at Seohyeon. “It’s going to rain soon, Hyeon. I don’t think that’s such a good idea.”

“Don’t worry Min. I’ll come back if the rain gets too heavy,” Seohyeon winked, and disappeared through the door without further delay. Min-ae could only sigh in exasperation at her best friend’s carefree attitude. She trusted too much in guys for her own good, and was bound to get herself hurt again.

He blinked when the first drop of moisture rolled down his forehead and into his eyes, trying to ignore the searing pain that accompanied it. Looking up at the vast sky above him, he realised that the rain was finally starting to fall. Soon enough, the few drops of rain eventually became a downpour, virtually drenching him to the bones.

Just great.

Ignoring the rain and the biting cold, Hyukjae continued to stroll slowly across the lawn of his university, thinking what he had done to deserve this.

Moments after he had left Shin-il’s dorm room, he received a phone call from his girlfriend. She had presented him with an absurd request for him to meet her at Apgujeong immediately, despite him telling her that he was at the university and was at least an hour away. Because of that, she threw a huge tantrum at him, and suggested that they should end their relationship if he couldn’t commit himself fully to it.

That was more than fine for him, actually. He had never felt happier to get out of a relationship without the girl being overly clingy of him.

However, there were also two problems. One, Lee Hyukjae should always be the one who initiates the break-up, not the girl; two, it was just low for her to end the relationship over the phone.

He definitely couldn’t swallow his pride, especially not when the girl was using his lack of time to accompany her as an excuse to cover up her cheating tendencies. Although he never really liked her from the beginning, he still couldn’t live that down.

Hyukjae came to a complete stop in the open space when he caught sight of a lone figure seated in the rain from the corner of his eyes, realising that his feet had brought him to the waterfront again when he looked around. Upon taking a closer glance at the person, he recognised that it was the girl he had seen several weeks ago.

She was seated in the very same spot with a purple raincoat thrown over her small frame, and took cover under a large umbrella which was just enough to keep her relatively dry as she happily scribbled in her notebook. The rain didn’t seem to be a deterrent for her, nor was she bothered by the fact that her pants were getting soaked by the rainwater.

He was tempted to walk up to her and initiate a conversation, but decided against it in the end. He wasn’t in a very decent mood at the moment, and he didn’t want to disrupt her concentration either. However, in spite of his less-than-happy mood that day, a smile subconsciously crept onto his lips as he continued watching her, completely forgetting that he was already completely drenched.
