Chapter 2
Silence speaks the words we don't want to hear; tears express the words that we can't say.
Kyuhyun was sitting on a chair nervously while waiting for the nurse to come out to tell him what’s wrong with Jian Ning.
“Please be fine! Please! Please!” He said, eyes closed, hands put together as he was praying hard for Jian Ning.
“Don’t worry too much, she’ll be fine. I’m sure of it.” Hangeng, who was sitting next to him, said.
Siwon was standing beside them, his back leaning against the wall, arms crossed. He didn’t really know why Hangeng told him to follow since well, he doesn’t really appreciate Jian Ning. He thinks she’s weird and trusts the rumors about her.
“Hyung, what were you doing there earlier? Aren’t you supposed to be working today?” Siwon suddenly asked Hangeng. The latter turned around and looked at him before giving him a warm smile.
“Haven’t I told you guys that I’m moving today? I thought I could get some help from you guys and give you a day off from school, but now, we’ll wait to see what’s wrong with that girl. By the way, who is she?“
“She’s Jian Ning. One of our classmates, but I just wish that she wasn’t one.” Siwon replied coldly.
“Oh? Why?” the white haired man asked.
“Man, you shouldn’t have cared about her. She’s totally strange, you know? She wore a hoodie today when I’m almost melting from the hotness now. Plus, I heard that she eats dog meat regularly, and all. Also-” Siwon was interrupted as he received a punch directly in his face, making him fell on his butt. He looked up, while rubbing his bruised cheek, to see that it was Kyu who hit him.
“Kyu? What the fuck man? What was that for?”
“For you to shut up! You don’t know anything about her!”Kyuhyun replied panting and with anger in his eyes. He was about to hit Siwon some more for everything he said about Jian Ning, but Hangeng stood up in time and took Kyuhyun by the shoulders to make him sit down on the chair.
“Calm down Kyu! Geez! You never got this angry before. Even when someone was yelling shits at you, you didn’t even bother. Why are you so worked up now?” The oldest man asked looking at Kyuhyun, but he didn’t get any answer. Kyuhyun was avoiding his hyung’s eyes. With that, he knew that Jian Ning was really important to his little friend.
“You’re alright Siwon?”Hangeng said while sticking his hand out to help Siwon stand up.
“Yeah, I’m fine!” Siwon said as he stood up, a hand on his swollen cheek.
“Let’s go! We have to get some ice for Siwon! And I think the nurse is coming out.” Hangeng said his arm around Siwon, while walking in the infirmary.
Kyuhyun immediately stood up when he heard that the nurse was coming out, rubbing the hand he used to hit Siwon earlier. It seems that he got hurt himself considering the amount of power he used for that single punch.
As the three boys entered the infirmary, Miss Lin, the nurse came out to meet them and saw one of them had a bruise on his left cheek and another one had his right hand injured.
“Oh my! What happened to you?” she asked Siwon.
“It’s nothing. Can I get an icepack please?” the latter asked, smiling awkwardly.
“Sure, just wait for me here! I’ll get it for you.”The nurse said and turned around to get what the student asked earlier.
“Hmpf! Serves you right!”Kyuhyun said coldly still angry.
“What the fuck man? Just for her, you had beaten up your best friend! Does she even deserve that much of your attention to start with? She’s abnormal! Get that right through your head got it?”Siwon replied looking right through his best friend’s eyes.
“You don’t know anything. She wasn’t like that… when… I… first… met her…”Kyuhyun said lowering his voices as he spoke.
“Tch. What do you know about her? It might be one of her tricks to lure you into pitying her.”Siwon retorted.
“Guys, this isn’t the time to argue and get upset ok? And Siwon, can you stop saying shits about her already? We don’t even know anything about her yet, except for Kyu. So, stop saying that she’s strange will you?”Hangeng said as he separated his friends to prevent them to eventually get into a fight… because of a girl…
Miss Lin came back minutes later with an icepack for Siwon’s bruised cheek and Kyuhyun’s swollen hand.
“Miss Lin, what’s the matter with Jian Ning? Why did she faint? How is she now? Is she awake yet? Can we see her?” Kyuhyun asked out of breath.
“Calm down, Mister Cho. She just had a heat stroke. I freed her from the hoodie she was wearing.”
“Thank God! Can we go see her now?” Geng asked.
“Sure, but before that, I have something to ask you guys about.” the nurse said.
Kyuhyun, Siwon and Hangeng looked at each other before looking at the nurse to ask: “What is it?”
“Do you guys have any idea in what state this young woman has been living in?”
“Eh… no?! How could we? It’s not like we live with her, right?”Siwon said, annoyed.
“Well, it seems that she’s being abused. I can see marks made by a whip, burns coming from lighted cigarettes, bruises that must have been because she got hit by something. Anyway, I’d like you guys to take her home today, is that possible?”
“Tsk! Why should we do that? I mean she’s probably guilty and did something to deserve all this, no?”Siwon replied, once again, with annoyance.
“Mister Choi, may I remind you that no one deserves to be that much abused and that every human being on this planet possessed the same rights? So what right does another human get to abuse of a young woman like her? Please, if you’re going to say anything else with more hatred in it, you can just leave now. Thank you!”The nurse said when she saw that Siwon was about to complain again.
The boys just stood there, blank. Kyuhyun couldn’t believe that Jian Ning had suffered this much. That could have explain why she started to act like she is now four years ago.
“Now, if you will excuse me boys? I have more things to do. You can go take a look at her if you want. She’s sleeping now.”The nurse said while walking back to her office.
Kyuhyun immediately opened the curtains around the small and white bed which contained the small woman that was more important to him than his own life. He took a chair, pulled it next to her bed and sat down.
Jian Ning was sleeping on the bed, the blanket covering the major part of her body. She looked peaceful and with the ray of light that was surrounding her, she seemed like an angel to Kyuhyun. But then, something caught his eyes. Miss Lin wasn’t lying. Bruises, scars even burns were seen on her arms. How on earth could this have happened?
Minutes later, tears could be seen falling down from her cheeks. She was troubled by the dream she was having, at least that’s what the boys thought.
“See? She’s possessed, I’m telling you!”Siwon said earning him a glare from his hyung.
“Stop saying non-sense and go get us a bowl of water got it?”Hangeng said.
Jian Ning was getting more agitated in her sleep than ever.
“No! Please, don’t! No, I don’t want this! It’s not my fault! Please, forgive me!”She said crying harder.
Kyuhyun sat on the bed and took her in his embrace.
