Have you heard of The Dream? "Shawty Is A 10"?

Because he was an early adopter of MTV Jams, our screenwriter friend Fataz stays up on all the ghetto fabulous hip hop and R&B, so he was able to croon "Shawty you a tiiiiiiiin" while we were still up on the Island this summer, but I didn't get to hear it until I, too, started spending mad time watching MTVJ, a development of the last couple weeks.

I love R&B songs like this--humming, dreamy, the Missy and Timbaland/R. Kelly formula, and it's damn near psychedelic: waterfall background choirs with lead vocals in a funny falsettoish voice over the bare-bones of a track made of nothing but drum machines, synthesizers, and weird noises. I guess we have T. Pain to thank for this particular drank, too, and the rapper Fabolous even has a hippie-psychedelic line in his verse: "Shawty is a Pisces/I heard they are feisty..." Om mani padme hum!

Also, I had a wonderful time with Allen last night at an industry party for Mr. http://nickverrreos.blogspot.com/ of Project Runway fame, and we made a game out of singing the chorus, "Shawty right there is a tiiiiiiin" whenever we saw a cute AND fabulous boy or girl in the crowd, and we met quite a few of them.

A little patient research on the song revealed that the original, pre-record deal "street" version of the song was called "Shawty Is The Shit", not a ten, which puts this song in that interesting group of songs that are actually improved by self-censorship because the new combination of words the artist splices on top of the offending crass language actually fits better. "Shawty is a ten" is so much more mellifluous than her being "the shit", trust me.

Anyway, which one of ya'll is feeling The Dream?
