OMNTD highlighed an article on anti-fans written by Ask a Korean. It has some good points, especially on interconnectivity but still doesn't fully explain why anti-fans can be so extreme. I'm not a sociology buff nor am I an expert on Korean history, but this comment brought up some general points on how such reaction could be stemming from the ( Read more... )

"Is this why K-pop fans see the ignorance tactic as a sign of strength more than weakness?"

Perhaps.. I have to say it was so refreshing it felt like a goddamn catharsis to see Heechul attack his own fans who had gone after BoA. "Finally, finallyyyy". If all artists had gone out and said 'we don't consider antis of other groups our fans', what would the fans do? Just ignore it, or would it actually have an effect? Would that be what it takes to change the climate for the better?

See, Heechul is interesting. He's already known as someone who does his own thing. But what if someone like Siwon who did that? Would he be praised or criticized for it? Granted, there's also the 'how' - if you're super rude, then of course flames will come. Also, I think SuJu has told their fans to play nice, but haven't directly said "stop hating on other groups."

As for fan reaction if that were to happen - an idol denouncing fans of his who are also anti-fans - I think there'd be a mixed response. There would be fans who'd feel guilty and stop with the hate, but then there would also be fans who'd be offended and stop liking that idol.

Doesn't SSF try to keep the site friendly towards other groups? I know they're big on Nothing Without 9, sometimes militantly so.

I'm not sure what it would take to change those kind of actions. Is it even possible to? When you've got fans declaring their love for an idol, you're going to have fans that want to ruin that idol's life also - equal and opposite reaction and all that

interesting! it seems like to get at anything resembling the truth, you have to wait until the idols reach around 30, once they're beyond the intensely controlled and reactive debut times, where you're carefully cultivating images and loyalties, and when you grow to your peak, and your company needs to capitalise on that for as long as possible, before the new crop of young-uns come in. companies seem well aware of the limited shelf-lives of their products, which i guess is why they go about testing the waters in japan and thereabouts. once you get past that, idols can start testing their idol boundaries, and eventually reveal 'the truth', or as much as they can or are willing to, i guess. i remember watching dbsk on come to play post-mirotic, where they mentioned having girlfriends. what passed through my head, even though i didn't actively go search this out or anything, was - are their anti-sites still active? are they releasing articles and spewing hatred about how basically these guys lied about being unattached? my thoughts are ( ... )
