HyoYeon and her Boy(s)

Jun 17, 2010 16:44

I've been thinking about this since watching the Strong Heart episode in which HyoYeon confessed to having a crush and then hearing about some of the fallout; the Y-Star clip trying to uncover the identity of HyoYeon's crush (brought to my attention when it was linked in snsd_ffa by hyoyeonfan) was just the cherry on top of a very mixed sundae. Let me first say ( Read more... )

Yeah, the whole HyoYeon + crush thing really got HyoYeon a lot of attention-probably because,i think when it comes to other idols, they talk about their ideal guys and all,but HyoYeon used to word love (if I remember it correctly XD).

Kind of like, she's not talking about her crush in an "it",idol like status way. She's talking about it as a normal girl who likes a boy.

But Hyo being "non-threatening" and being viewed as someone not pretty/desirable enough does sound like another factor.I mean...I remember how the TaeYeon got a lot of hate for the TaeSu issue.

Yes. Talking about "an ideal type" allows for some kind of abstract gloss--"He's my ideal guy but I'm not really looking to date him." What HyoYeon said was: I have a guy I like. I wish I could date him but I don't have the confidence.

She was just so direct about it. No dancing around the issue (except for her crush's identity). We're so used to idols avoiding certain issues that to have one be direct and upfront is just . . . odd. "Idols" come with a lot of expectations and for an "idol" to know stick to those unspoken rules can be dangerous for that idol's reputation and, by extension, career.

Those sesang (or however it's spelled) fans know information because they are possessive. The thing is, they gather the information in order to protect their idols, i.e. their, uh, stalking and consequent keeping of secrets are out of a need to help their idols along. The moment they feel betrayed, that information is liable to become blackmail. It happened with some 2PM members and the leaking of potentially implicating pictures.

Yeah,I agree.Trust Hyo with her ability to shock everyone XD You pretty much managed to express what I wanted to say but more to the point.

Hm,I get your point about the sesang fans.I suppose,in a way,but having control of the information about their idols-then they get to in a way somehow "own" their idols.I feel that they are in a very unique position in that they can choose to "make or break" their idols.

But it sometimes makes it feel as if the Korean vs international fandom are seperate entities instead of "one fandom".I don't suppose that the international fandom has warm, fuzzy feelings for the korean side of the fandom either, who are usually percieved as nuts (or really malicious netizens).

I think it is a combination of what you said about popularity, ideal types etc but also think about Hyoyeon in comparison to the rest of the members of SNSD. When people think of SNSD girls she is probably not one of the first ones thought of and she's not all over the place in demand on tv ads or shows like others have been. Her personality type is also much more blunt/awkward and she doesn't seem to have a carefully crafted image that the others do so she may seem less 'idolish' to people. Remember when we watched her on Strong Heart she seemed like any girl nervously talking about her crush. Not some confident idol girl who is professing her love of a guy with the INTENTION of getting him ( ... )
