Bloody Spiders!

Why is it spiders walk towards you when you first see them?
Sitting mildly watching telly this evening I noticed one walking out from underneath it. Freaked the crap out of me and my girlfriend, meatina. I killed it of course, spiders don't live in this house, with a hoover. It took the combined efforts of me and my girlfriend, but it eventually went down
