I've had the pleasure of enjoying a lot of great music in the past few days. Last Friday I saw Monolake at the Empty Bottle, and he was excellent as usual. The weekend included a brief trip to Detroit to see Rhythm & Sound and whatever else of the festival we could catch on Saturday, where an unexpected highlight was Guido Schneider. I like Music for 18 Musicians alright but I'm pretty tired of the universal acceptance it enjoys. I don't think it's as good as his earlier work like Drumming and the phase pieces and I think enjoys so much praise because it so closely resembles tonal music. I'm not sure that what people are liking is the complexity or "interesting-ness" (like this guy suggests in the quote you posted) so much as the comforting feeling the music has.

Then again, maybe I'm just a fusspot. :)

Incidentally and belatedly, I actually agree with you, but I also do like the piece well enough (you might say it comforts me, ha) and the performance was actually pretty good. And free, too.

Yeah, it's good music. I just don't think it's some monument in musical history like a lot of people seem to.

Funny, I was just thinking about this last night and wondering if you ever read it.
