my computer is infected with spyware. yuk!
this problem did not exist the last time I had the internet.
does anyone have advice on how to kill spyware?

Yes, for spyware detection deletion, there is

Oh, and remember to make sure whichever spyware detection thing you use that you get its latest definition library (which typically happens when you first open it, along with a request for a restore point), so you make a rather current sweep of items.

Also, I suggest Firefox because I really like it, and I like all the extensions they have for it. If you want any suggestions, I'll be more than happy to-- just not now. I need to get back to work.

And if you still have troubles after running Adaware twice and the other in between that, you may have to resort to support forums, such as those offered by Adaware (Lavasoft). They'll likely direct you to download a program called Hijack This, which will completely stop anything from running on your computer ever again. If you should need any help to this point, I will need a log from you running a "full scan" on Adaware.

One last thing: you should probably run Windows Update. It won't help with your current situation, but if someone uses your computer and they use IE for whatever reason, you still have a rather unprotected broswer. Microsoft has some patches for Internet Explorer that are somewhat useful and necessary, even though the browser is like a big ship in a glacier bay filled with mines.
