The point of view is kind of strange/off-setting. Sometimes it’s like a third person (omniscient), sometimes it’s third person (but you don’t know what everyone’s thinking), and then it goes to different characters’ fist person point of view. The author catches you attention pretty well, but only after the first few paragraphs. But the mystery about the people draws you in. You get the feeling that they’re well developed characters before we see them; there’s already a human-ness to them, but we know little more than their genders and approximate ages. It seems like the "classic" ideal gentleman (usually a British gentleman) was the one who covered up his character and personality the most and became as blandly “proper” and conformed to the stereotype as much as possible, and better/more than anyone else.
