Cultural Writing/Reading Differences?

So, I had an interesting thing happen to me and it made me wonder about cultural reading. Now, this is probably better appropriated to earlier English writing rather than current as a lot of authors now don't have this style. I'm a huge fan of Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy and I find Douglas Adams' style of writing to be exceptionally unique... ( Read more... )

Could it be a cultural thing? It takes a unique American to enjoy Alice and Hitchhiker's.

I'm not sure if it is or is not a cultural thing, I just thought it was interesting that I had this certain tone bouncing around in my head and it was only those that would have been more likely to grow up with it that enjoyed it.

Does it take a unique American to enjoy them? I agree that it's definitely a different tone and it could be a shock to try and get used to, but I find it wholly delighting.

It is a good writing style; I love the books.

I don't know of many others in RL (fellow Americans iow) who do, though.

Just a thought.

That's a shame. I think everyone should read at least the first book of Hitchhiker's guide. I've re-read that countless times.
