If Ever I Return, Pretty Peggy-O by
Sharyn McCrumb. I guess I first read Sharyn McCrumb because she was a Guest of Honor at my first WisCon back in 1995. This is part of her "Ballads" series, AKA the Spencer Arrowood books; in fact it's the first. I've read at least one other. Mystery series annoy me because you always have to dig to find out the correct order, which sometimes isn't the correct order because they don't occur in chronological order, and even though they stand alone and it shouldn't matter the order you read them in it bugs me anyway.
That really has very little to do with this book. I'm just ranting.
Anyway, this is not one of those books you read because the mystery is really hard to figure out; I never figure out mysteries, and I knew who the killer was halfway through. I like McCrumb's books for the setting and characters, and because although she clearly loves Appalachia she doesn't pretend that it's a pastoral paradise. Light and quick and enjoyable.
