54. Travel Light by Naomi Mitchison. Well, you all should read this immediately. I'm an idiot, considering that Small Beer Press put this edition out six years ago and I've only just read it now; now I need to find every other book that Mitchison ever wrote (and it's a long list). Want reasons? OK. This is a book about a girl who is: 1. kicked out of the castle by an evil stepmother 2. raised first by bears, then by dragons 3. taught to fear and despise "heroes" 4. persistently recruited by a Valkyrie and 5. given the titular advice by the wandering All-Father Odin himself. And really, that's not even a particularly spoilery summary; it's a short book, but there's a lot more. Go. Read it. Now.
