114. Gifts by Ursula K. Le Guin. This is Le Guin's most recent YA series, set in a largely unpleasant world where "gifts" are magical powers passed on through families. The problem being that many of those gifts are terrifying in nature, like creating mind-knives and giving people a slow wasting disease and unmaking them with a word and a gesture. This last power is the "gift" of Orrec's family, a fearsome tool for intimidation and keeping rival Brantors--chiefs with a strong Gift--away from their territory. But when Orrec's gift fails to manifest, then seems to manifest in a terrifying and uncontrollable manner, the full horror of this world's obsession with power begins to unfold. First book of a trilogy.
