Cell Phone Abroad?

To all my travel-savvy friends- what do you use when you are abroad? We travel quite a bit and every time I plan to look into international travel cell phone rates, I get sidetracked and then get a lovely call from my provider telling me that I owe them 1 million dollars and that I should switch to an international plan. We have simple GSM(?) phone and buy local prepaid SIM card in the countries we go to (or rather used to go to). In Germany, from what I recall, rates were quite reasonable and sim card itself was free. In France, sim card alone was $30. But this info is of 6 years ago (h-nyk).

We always buy local prepaid phone in regular stores. In Germany we bought TMobile.

We usually get local gsm cards of "pay as you go type". Cards go into our old unlocked phones ftprom t-mobile. T-mobile actually unlock phones for you if you know who to ask.

Use a GSM phone. I just got an unlocked smartphone (which doubles as a 3G tablet), was using a cheap small Nokia before that.
