Staley's stark confessional lyrics are similarly effective, and consistently miserable. Sometimes he's just numb and apathetic, totally desensitized to the outside world; sometimes his self-justifications betray a shockingly casual amorality; his moments of self-recognition are permeated by despair and suicidal self-loathing.

I can think of 70s progressive rock that's darker than most metal today. I have almost degraded listening to metal to being "fun" music or "workout" music, just because of its energy, but it's hardly contemplative to Alice in Chains' level, with some exceptions.

Exactly. Metal is a genre with a few (but untouchable) rock and roll contributions, but much of it is just pure pulp.
