I always got a kick out of Cassie. I never really hated her, just didn't want her for the boys. LOL She was too into her equipment to be interested in the guys, though. I mean her Forensic toys. LOL I liked her much better then Carolyn, but not as much as Megan Connor.

I've been thinking about it - and I'm planning to write a meta on this later on in the week - and I think Cassie was a botched first attempt to introduce Megan. The two of them have a lot of similarities, and I think TPTB were trying to do the same thing with Cassie that they end up doing with Megan. So it makes sense that you'd like Megan a little better...

I think Cassie's an interesting character, in part because of her flaws, not in spite of them. :-)

I like that hypothesis. I think a lot of the time, shows only introduce new characters when someone is leaving, and their attempts to make the character seem good enough/better than the existing characters only further irritate the fans. So it doesn't surprise me that it took them a couple of tries to get an interesting female character off the ground...

And, actually, now that I've been thinking about it, they're both kind of an attempt to get Carolyn back into the mix...

Apropos of nothing - I really wish this pic was just of Blair, because that pose of his in the background? Yum.

Hee! Blair is quite pretty in much of this ep. I love the muted brown and green shirt he's wearing in the beginning, as well as his layered look here. Unfortunately the sideburns of doom are beginning the make their entrance...

I agree that the writers were ham-fisted. There's a lot of potential in her character, and she's smart enough that I think she could give Blair a run for his mental money... providing a friend that Blair is sorely lacking in canon. Having Blair's best friend annoy Jim... that would be a bonus!

I agree about her being a potential friend for Blair - as much as people seem to think she wants to replace him, they're actually pretty friendly, in much the way he and Megan end up being. In Breaking Ground they get pretty close as they're working on the symbol translation.

She actually serves several purposes - she's a smart friend for Blair, she's good with technology, but she's also a professional-level person that can be in the field with Jim and Blair more than Simon can. The more I think about it, the more intrigued I get with her possibilities...

TBH I think once rumours circulated that the character of Cassie was in as a potential replacement for Blair, she was doomed no matter who played her and the character was not helped by the script, which had her come across as annoying and interfering rather than an asset ( ... )

I agree - I think there's some interested parallels with how they introduced Megan and how they introduced Cassie. They certainly both had the obligatory "sparks"/conflict with Jim, and they both ended up becoming friends with Blair. I'm going to talk about Breaking Ground next (at some point), where I think we really see the friendship between Cassie and Blair developing.

I don't know why they introduced Cassie in such a boneheaded fashion - in my opinion, they were kind of dooming her from the start, as you say, and I don't know why they couldn't see that.

I guess it's possible that they might have wanted a recurring woman character, because they didn't really have anyone like that after Carolyn left. And I did hear that initially they wanted Jim and Carolyn to be kind of reuniting.
