When people don't understand my writing, I just don't get it. It's like, haven't you ever dealt with feeling insecure, social anxiety or abuse??? Come on people, I know those things happen! Getting and receiving feedback is not easy, but sometimes it gets further complicated with difference in worldview between peers in a class or workshop (or even difference in view between instructor and student). It's unfortunate, but it happens. I often use the example of a particular writer's group I was involved with for a short time to point out to others how it is difficult for a writer to get decent feedback. I tell them that when I was in this group, we had a rule that everyone had to read each other's stories and give a crit. So, I read and began writing up crits. I read this bodice-ripper romance someone had written (which is the sort of thing I never read myself) and I tried to be open and think what things were acceptable for romance when I was writing my crit. (like you can't say 'I think your female character is way too submissive' because it's a bodice-ripper romance!) and I wrote up my crit and submitted it. And then this woman who had written the romance tells me that she isn't going to submit a crit to me because my ( ... )

I do think it was that they weren't putting the sort of effort I expected into understanding the piece. I think that most read it only once and did not really give thought about how it could be imporved. They just scribbled question marks by the part where she tells the fairy tale and the part where she sees the other character as a dog ( ... )
