Aria was at the house when the trouble started, his Dominus had guests and he was helping to keep the wine flow steady. The rebellion had been whispered around the ludus for weeks. Alexander hadn't dared hope of it, so when the fighting washed over the estate of his master like a tidal wave, it took him by surprise. He'd been in the practice yard, sparring with one of his brother gladiators when he heard the first screams of terror from the house.

Everyone stopped and looked to the house. The other gladiators looked to Alexander. As did the guards, then the fighting spilled into the yard. A gladiator he knew from another ludus ran past him. "Brothers! You are free!"

The guards broke and ran as his brother gladiators charged them. Alexander dropped the wooden practice sword and picked up the steel blade that was abandoned by a guard. He ran toward the house, the one thing on his mind was finding if Aria was alive. He ran passed the crumpled body of his Dominus and Domina.

There were bodies everywhere, guards, high born guests, some house slaves. But no where did he see his lover. "Aria!"

Aria found himself backed into a corner of one of the bedrooms, he'd hoped to hide but the room had filled with fighting men and he was in danger of being caught up in it. There was blood and gore everywhere, there was a body at his feet with half of his head missing and his brains spilling out of his skull. Aria heaved but managed to stop himself from vomiting. He was terrified, knowing there was a good chance he'd be killed, he was no fighter and skilled men were falling faster than he could count.
