Light Reads

Both jenza and I are going on trips to exotic and faraway places this summer, and we have both been obsessing over what to bring to read (on the plane and in our down time). Both of us are not good at concentrating on airplanes, and I have trouble concentrating on reading outside of my home. So we're looking for some light, enjoyable reads ( Read more... )

Might I suggest Dostoevsky? ;P

I actually like Tracy Chevalier's books for my airplane reading.

you could go with the velvet three: stephen graham jones, craig clevenger, and will christopher baer. the three of them are amongst the best i've found. clevenger turned me on to steve erickson, but his books are all out of print these days. i've recently read some paul auster, good stuff for sure. i could really go on. and on.

For plane travel, I'm a big mass-market, short-sentance, don't think about, murder-suspense novels that you can pick up at target... e.g., james patterson, patricia cornwell, or lisa scottoline (I just finished Devil's Corner)

But.. if you looking for something, umm, a little more "respectable" to read in front of others, I also enjoyed these books all in paperback (although there is a high probability that you've already read them):

The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time, Mark Haddon
Life of Pi, Yann Martel
Prodigal Summer, Barbara Kingsolver

For travel I'd typically suggest a book by Bill Bryson, but anything I could suggest has already been read by Jenza's...

Maybe use this occasion to read something you normally would not.

I keep a collection of dishy celebrity biographies for just such an occasion. Or Valley of the Dolls - horrible yet wonderful.
