When you're trained in the use of force, you get pretty used to using a gun. You tend to think of it as less "sport" and more "survival". There's no hunting or "prey" persay [unless you're him] but you get tunnel vision. It's much more visceral to use one to defend yourself then it is to kill something outright.
Guns however, should always be a last resort in defending yourself...unless you're having a really bad day. In which case, if the situation warrants it then feel free to assume liability. If you make a good case that the fucker who you were shooting at was making you feel "imminent bodily harm" you usually get off with a two week suspension and maybe have your pay docked for a month.
