Wow, haven't been on LJ in forever, this is so sad, I'm so sorry Sonja. It sounds to me like it started as a UTI, which can lead to kidney stones, but if caught early enough can be treated with medicines. Although it sounds like by the time anyone knew something was wrong it was past the medicine stage. Many, many hugs and condolences to you! In the future, cats do not urinate on things "out of spite". Any time they don't use the litter box, something is wrong. My cats like to try to pee in the bathroom sink when they first start getting a UTI, and then they use the hallway instead of the litter box. If you can find them, cat treats with cranberry can help prevent UTIs from forming (yes, it works for cats, too). Always make sure they have plenty of water; high iodine and sodium content in cat food can cause UTIs, but if they are getting lots of water it will help keep their systems clear.
