Oh, I really love this! Jacob is such a subtle character, and I love seeing this side of him.

It is Jacob who is sick, driven to continue because turning back would mean it was all for nothing.

I especially like this line.

Very nicely done. I just have this imagery in my head of a rotting log for some reason. Or a dying tree. Something you think is just there, but really has a life that can end. Good job. :)
