This guy I know was nice enough to hook me up with a test account for
Google gmail. It's... um... interesting. So if you don't know what all the hoopla's about, I'll fill you in, because I didn't know either.
* It has tons of keyboard shortcuts... even though it's webmail. For example, you can be in your browser, reading old mail, type "c" and the compose mail page is loaded. Sort of a cool feature.
* No folders. Instead, you search for your email using the Google search function. This wil be a concept I'll have to get used to... my Outlook has tons of little organized archive folders... grrrrrr....
* No pop-up or banner ads.
* Emailing someone (or a group) back and forth normally creates reply emails. In gmail, it threads it like a conversation... all in the same e-mail. So if say, I write Denmon about something, and he comments, then I comment back, etc... the original e-mail always refreshes itself to the top of the inbox so I know the conversation has continued, and each new reply is added to the original e-mail so it's all readable like a chat session.
Oh, and I was stoked to get one because I thought I'd be able to choose a short screenname before the masses get theirs hands on an account. Truth be told, I couldn't get the ones I really wanted because your name has to be at least 6 characters long. Plan ahead!
Strange features. I already feel a few limitations, but, it's a gig of storage, it's free, it's hard to get one, and it's different. I have to admit I've been pretty bored with the net, so this is something new that's gonna take a bit of getting used to. Refreshing.
FYI, when I have extra g-mail account invites, I will let y'all know. We can have "conversations".
