It's like that with German too, which is why I won't take any of their classes. You'd think once you get to the higher level, they'd want to perfect your language skills. But noooo, they want you to learn about the cultural stuff.
There are tons of Spanish / German / Japanese / Swahili / whatever majors that sound like total gringos because of their accent, grammar and vocabulary mistakes.
You'd think they'd want their graduates to speak their language WELL, but apparently learning about culture is a more "broadening liberal arts" experience, or something.
Middlebury was the same way... and it's what, supposed to be the best language school in the country? I always thought it was lame, but I think my writing... wait no. I think I deteriorated post-abroad. The only thing I could do was argue with the native speakers less timidly in literature discussion...The only way to keep it up, I think, is go abroad again. My Spanish got much better when I was in Spain for a month.
well, they have it. but really (it kinda makes sense) most of the real language and grammar and writing is the first few classes, then you ry to apply it to different studies. there are some available upper level linguistics type things like i mentioned, but the necessary prereq i dont have and then will have graduated by the time i do have it so it wont get me in the classes. the departments ok for the most part, id jsut like more intensive language and to just call a truce in forgetting about the mayans and mestizaje
