You can use a picture of you, or whatever, as long as its 100 X 100 or smaller ( I don't know exactly what measurements that is in..) but there are lots of icon communities, you can search for them through livejournal, clicking on an intrest or something. If its made by someone, oftentimes they'll ask you to credit them. Then highlight the icon, and save it to "my pictures" then go to manage your info or user pics and upload it. Don't know if that's clear or whatnot, but there ya go.
