I always sorta avoided them. People are usually meaner to underclassmen, right?

I see no reason to pay any respect simply because of something like that. I'll be there in a couple years, but it won't make me any different.

But I guess it's smart to be respectful to some upperclassmen, unless you don't mind getting beaten up.

That's how things work, of course, you should always pay respect to those in a higher position.
Of course, that doesn't mean you'll deserve such respect by simply doing nothing, which is why I hope you're going to work hard in order to be a good role model for your underclassmen, Cole.

Not that I see much point in giving respect to those who didn't earn it.
