2008 End of the Year Survey Whatchamajigger
1. What did you do in 2008 that you'd never done before?
I went without employment for an entire year. It is and isn't as awesome as it sounds. On the one hand you get to do whatever the fuck you want, but on the other hand you're broke as fuck all the time. It was necessary though for my own mental health. I had a lot of shit I needed to get the fuck over so a sabbatical was in order. I think I've mostly gotten over it.
2. Did you keep your New Year's resolutions and will you make more for next year?
I don't make resolutions. I could make a monitor resolution joke here, but that would be effort.
3. Did anyone close to you give birth?
My friend Tom became a daddy this year, and my friend Clint was a "daddy" for like a week (the girl he was dating at the time was knocked up before they met and he was "dad" for about a week before they split up).
4. Did anyone close to you die?
Several. Quite a few people I used to take care of died, and somebody that tried her hardest to save my ass (at the cost of her own safe job) during that bullshit with the state home died from her cancer finally.
5. What countries did you visit?
None.
6. What would you like to have in 2009 that you lacked in 2008?
A stable job that pays well and isn't in a factory. Manufacturing always has been and always will be one of the worst sectors to work in. It makes me a heretic to the people of this town to say such a thing, but they need to wake up to the fact that they're toiling in a job that can (and often is) moved overseas at the whim of Corporate and has all the security of a can of gas in a fire. It also has some of the worst benefits of any employment in this town short of working at McDonalds.
7. What dates from 2008 will remain etched on your memory, and why?
November 4, 2008. America elected a non-white man for its president. If Sarah Palin hadn't been so cow fucking retarded it would have been cool to have our first woman VP, but god damn was that bitch criminally inept.
8. What was your biggest achievement of the year?
I did some carpentry-type work. That's like huge for me.
9. What was your biggest failure?
Pretty much the entire year.
10. Did you suffer illness or injury?
I caught a cold that was supposed to wreck my shit, but it lasted for like four days. Those four days were misery though.
11. What was the best thing you bought?
Fallout 3
12. Whose behaviour merited celebration?
Ron Paul. His hypocracy was legendary.
13. Whose behaviour made you appalled and depressed?
The state of Nebraska. We were like the first state to repeal Affirmative Action. Doing away with Affirmative Action is debatable as to if it is a good thing or not, but we really didn't need to be the first state. We've got enough of an image for being hicks as it is.
14. Where did most of your money go?
Bills. I need to do something about that.
15. What did you get really, really, really excited about?
Sadly it was Fallout 3.
16. What song will always remind you of 2008?
Battles - Ddiamondd (FUCK YOU, JULES, YOU GOT THIS SONG STUCK IN MY HEAD)
17. Compared to this time last year, are you:
happier or sadder? I dunno. I suppose happier.
thinner or fatter? Probably about the same.
richer or poorer? Holy what the fuck poorer. I went from making $30k in 2006 to <$10k in 2007 to $0 in 2008.
18. What do you wish you'd done more of?
Working for money. I did far too much for free work in 2008.
19. What do you wish you'd done less of?
Being depressed as fuck.
21. Did you fall in love in 2008?
Nope.
22. How many one-night stands?
Nope.
23. What was your favourite TV program?
Doctor Who
24. Are you angry at anyone now that you weren't angry at this time last year?
Yeah. The unemployment system really pissed me off in the last half of 2008.
25. What were the best books you read?
I didn't really do any reading in 2008, but a person on the internet sent me "When In The Course of Human Events: Arguing the Case for Southern Secession" as a gift and I read part of it. What I read was interesting.
26. What was your greatest musical discovery?
The Giraffes, Boards of Canada, Bear vs. Shark, Drive Like Jehu. I'd also like to throw in This American Life. It isn't music, but hot damn is it an awesome radio show.
27. What did you want and get?
Nothing really.
28. What did you want and not get?
A job.
29. What was your favourite film of this year?
The Dark Knight
30. What did you do on your birthday and how old were you?
25 and I did nothing.
31. What one thing would have made your year immeasurably more satisfying?
Some pussy would have been nice, but you have to be the oppposite of socially retarded and unpleasant to look at to get that.
32. How would you describe your personal fashion concept in 2008?
Clothes.
33. What kept you sane?
Not working a string of shitball jobs just to make a buck.
34. Which celebrity/public figure did you fancy the most?
None of them.
35. What political issue stirred you the most?
Trolling Paulsies and then trolling conservatives once the Paulsies shut up.
36. Who did you miss?
A lot of people that I won't bother to list.
37. Who was the best new person you met?
I can't say that I met anyone new this year that I can remember.
38. Tell us a valuable life lesson you learnt in 2008?
You're putty now in my hand.
