Israel strikes Beirut airport. To many people this may seem how it is. I know growing up as a kid all I heard about was how horrible Beirut was. I think that for many, it's just assumed that that's how it is down there. I could be wrong, but I'm guessing that's the average everyday perspective, and it's understandable, it's not like we often hear ( Read more... )

Too bad.

If this was so undesired then Hezbollah shouldnt have 1) invaded Israeli territory, 2) attacked a convoy, and 3) captured two Israeli soldiers.

Hezbollah brought this onto themselves and the Lebanese state. Israel is showing the government of Lebanon the consquences of not controlling the actions of Hezbollah.

Oh well.

How appathetic and short sighted can you get?

This story is much more complex and convoluted than your simple explanation seems to want to show.

Blame asside my point is that the Peace has taken a major blow and that this has the potential to have a major impact on global stability.

I don't care who you want to blame, that's not my point.

Highlighting how Beirut has changed, the news mentioned that Mariah Carey is scheduled to play there in the next couple weeks. It will probably be cancelled now but it shows the stability of the region up to now.

Unfortunately, with Iran and Syria trying to gain more power in the region and influencing Hezbellah as well as Hamas, it's Lebanon who loses. But the anonymous commentor makes a point, the governments need to learn that allowing groups like that to flourish in your country doesn't pay and Israel is proving that point. It's definitely a blow to peace and the region but I feel Israel is justified at this point. We'll have to see how this goes over the next couple weeks. The G8 summit will be impacted as well and if the captured Israeli soldiers make it to Iran all hell's going to break loose.

Israel had a strategic plan for bombing the runways at Beirut International, just like it does for all actions taken in defending its right to exist. The Israelis received intelligence suggesting that the captured soldiers would be flown into Iran from Beirut as bargaining chips for the release of Hizbollah militants, as well as a way of influencing the UN Security Council's actions on Tehran's nuclear program. Beirut is the only international airport in Lebanon and the only way the soldiers could get to Iran, therefore it made sense to destroy the runways ( ... )
