An undergraduate's dilemma

I'm a undergrad student majoring in sociology, going into my second semester. Sociology is my passion and it has opened up avenues of intellectual thought in my life, as I'm sure it has for most of you. It has compelled me to change and critique my own life. As much as I love the subject, I am worried about graduating in this field and heading to ( Read more... )

My advice: 1) Multiple majors. 2) Get a job (while in school) in an area that's both practical and interesting to you; try to keep it until you graduate. Somewhere in the mix, you'll figure out whether grad school's really something you'd like to pursue - but you'll then have "options", if it's not ( ... )

If you are all interested in energy or evaluation/program evaluation there are upcoming jobs there.

Otherwise, build a strong quant skill base.

Keep in mind that, in the new, new, new economy, it's hard for any recent graduate to get a job. For example, in Baltimore, where I live, nursing grads (a critical field) are going unemployed. It's insane. The last figure I saw showed almost 1/5 of the college grads from 2009 are *still* unemployed, and if you factored that into 'under-employed', where they just took a part time or piece together part time jobs, its about 35 ( ... )
