Presenting at a sociology conference. Help!

Feb 22, 2011 00:10

Ok, so I'm 19 and this will be my first time presenting at a conference. The conference accepts both undergrad and grad presentations. I submitted a proposal that was really a draft of something I had written in school. I submitted it simply in order to be able to get into the conference in the first place. And because I really didn't have time to ( Read more... )

I'd say 2 and 3.

I've done summer research 2 years in a row. So we all only had 2 months to get everything done, so most of us had on-going research. No one I presented to was critical or anything like that!

And did you submit an abstract or anything? I could see trying to submit a new abstract/summary if things have really changed that much!

I'd say dress nice. So a conservative dress, or nice dress pants and a blouse!
Definitely don't wear jeans or anything low cut!

BTW check out this conference if you'd like as well! I believe it's the biggest research conference west of the Mississippi! And it's my school and I've presented there twice. :)

I did submit an abstract..along with the proposal. You're right. I think I will send them a new abstract/summary. It makes sense, since I think they'll have brochures for everyone.

It's good to hear that no one was critical. Sounds good :) I'd be nervous though in front of a larger audience. I was told this conference would be roughly a classroom size of about 40 people.

This conference sounds good. And it is so much closer to where I live. I'll be going down to New Orleans for this particular conference. Maybe I'll register for it next year. :)

I would say don't worry about it - professors will understand that you're pretty new at this! If you're really concerned about the quality of your work, have one of your current profs/mentors look it over.

Roll with it. Do tell the audience that since this is an ongoing project, there are some changes to the content and ideas and explain the new direction. It is a good experience for you and also, you might get some feedback from people who attend, which would make it even better. Have a prof look it over before you go and rehearse as well, have a plan. People tend to be supportive at these things, especially toward undergrads, so you shouldn't worry too much, just enjoy the experience. Drop me a message here if you want some side feedback on your stuff, I do it for my students often.
