I know Ph.D.s with nonacademic jobs in medical research & in government, and would suggest mentioning grantwriting as an essential skill to develop for the nonacademic jobs. We seem to have some students who are getting soc or criminal justice masters to work in probation/parole. My first job with a PhD in Sociology was faculty in Pediatrics at a university hospital. I was running a grant, but I had the COOLEST ever Id card :) I love that it said, faculty in medium letters but Pediatrics in huge letters, so much fun to wear :) With my BA I got a government job, grant work as well, but more scut work. Now I am a professor. I tell my students you can do ANYTHING with a Soc degree!
You really can do anything w/it, IMO. My B.S. was Psych, Religious Studies and Soc; I work in software quality assurance for a medical device company dealing w/cancer diagnostics. Go fig ;)
Yes, but nothing specifically requires it. Honestly, we need to be training sociology undergrads in SAS/SQL so they can at least get datamining and DBA jobs. Otherwise it's not much better than a liberal arts degree. "Oh so this means you can write. Like any other major. OK. Next!"
