Thank you! Last year a swallow pair built a nest in another corner of the porch by adding onto the remains of their nest from the previous year. The two parts didn't adhere well, and the new, top half finally fell off -- along with the three chicks, who amazingly weren't hurt. I reassembled the nest by curving a piece of cardboard around the whole shebang and tacking that to the wall. The chicks didn't mind, but the parents weren't satisfied until they'd covered the entire surface of the cardboard with a layer of mud!
Thanky kindly! I just hope that my big lumbering presence in her nest twice a day won't freak her out too much. It took her about an hour to get brave enough to land next to the cups, and another twenty-four hours to stop staring at the McDonald's cup with a WTF look on her face and figure out that there was something edible in it.
Awww! We used to have swallows nest on our front porch every year. Good thing we mainly used the back entrance, because they'd dive bomb the postman and anyone else using the front door. If she wasn't dive-bombing you she must already be pretty exhausted, or else she knows you mean no harm. Good on you for lending a helping hand!!
LOL at your Kamikaze swallows! Ours aren't that brave; they just fly away if you get close to the nest, and circle the yard until you go inside. The porch light doesn't seem to bother them; in fact this mother leaps out and snatches the flying bugs that the light attracts. I just move as quietly around her as I can, fill the cups quickly, and get out of her way. ;D
