Shoot 'Em Up

Probably the most positive thing I can say about Shoot 'Em Up is that it reminded me a lot of Children of Men. Both are violent stories centered on babies, and both star Clive Owen as an almost inexplicably heroic man who either shoots guns a whole lot or never so much as squeezes a trigger. (Try to guess in which film he does which.) Sometimes I ( Read more... )

It is still funny but a lot of the jokes fall flat now.

I thought Shoot Em Up was fantastic but comparing it to Hot Fuzz seems entirely unfair. While I haven't seen either Hot Fuzz or Shaun of the Dead (despite owning it on DVD) those films seem to exude a certain bit of quality, not necessarily in the classic "lol its british" sense but in the sense that it stands on its own despite being an obvious relation to the types of movies it's mimicking.

Reall SEU reminds me a lot of Crank, but replace the Chinese Shit with a baby, Statham with Owen, and the overt comedy with gunplay. It was less on the humor side and more on the over-the-top scenes and blatant cheese than an actual plot, really SEU is a Tom & Jerry movie where Jerry gets the upper hand as time goes on.

You should watch Hot Fuzz because while they are not directly comparable, IMO Hot Fuzz achieves everything Shoot Em Up tries to achieve plus a whole lot more.

Interesting review, though i disagree. Belluci did not really need to be in the film, and i rather enjoyed giamattis over the top acting. I would give it a 3.5/5.

And for Airplane! 5/5, one of the best comedies in history, i still enjoy it today.
