Being a stranger in this unexpected fandom...
A few weeks back I ventured out from my corner of cyberspace and toed my way through some Criminal Mind fanfiction. Because it doesn't happen often, and it's not likely to happen again for a while, I thought I'd offer some recommendations from what I found.
Most of these I found by link jumping, and I'm not sure I'd ever be able to find them again if I hadn't bookmarked them, even though three of them are housed in the same space. Go figure.
You can find them...
The State of Things by twincy
Author's summary: Morgan sees Reid in every one of the victims: too young, too smart, too vulnerable.
Favorite line: He doesn't look twenty-four. He looks younger, and at the same time older, and at the same time dead.
My review: The tone is what drew me in, tense and consistent throughout.
Warning: possibly for violent imagery.

On The Other Side by nebula99
Author's summary: Garcia and Reid are coping with what happened in Penelope.
Favorite line: Reid, however, sat upright at the very end of the couch, knees and feet pressed primly together and elbows tucked in as if his space allowance was rationed.
My review: Though not how I would interpret the relationship between the team members, the depictions here are very believable possibilities that are elegantly executed. On a sidenote, I like that within the story the author references Charles Dickens' habit of using made-up words in his books. It's the type of thing that makes me wonder if nebula99 has ever followed suit, and would please me if I discovered she had.
Warning: none I can think of. Spoilers for Penelope, I suppose, if that wasn't already obvious.

Bread is to Stone as Fish is to Serpent by Isilya
Author's summary: The killer we are looking for is well educated and is most likely a white male in his early thirties.
Favorite line: The group is still and silent for a moment. You're skeptical of their remorse; all you see around you are Type A personalities. You want to tell them "it's not the job, it's you."
My review: If you read this one you have to commit to it. It's not terribly long, but you must read it to the end, then judge, then read it again. Extra points if you are paying attention to the profile the team has been giving out. Personally, I enjoy the fact that the author breaks the misguided convention of "never using second person." It works beautifully in this context, is in fact necessary in this context, and is well executed.
Warning: maybe for language

Disconnect and Self Destruct by tfm
Author's summary: After Emily's death at the hands of Benjamin Cyrus, Reid finds himself falling into a spiral of mental destruction.
Favorite line: Reid wants some time alone. That's something that Hotch isn't ready to give him. Not right away.
My Review: A well crafted what-if. The team interdependency is present and strong and the writing is solid.
Warning: AU? Character death? Spoilers for Minimal Loss? I think that's pretty evident.

That's all, kids. :)
I did read a few others that I enjoyed. I reviewed everything I read that I actually finished reading, and I'm sure there are many fics that are stellar that I missed out on reading, but there are only so many hours in a day, and these are the ones that stood out to me. If these links be of some use to you, excellent. If not, thus is the way of random LJ posting.
