Have work to do, so of course I'm on here. So college Halloween is just kind of about dressing up like a slut and calling it a costume (no offense to anyone, I was a slutty nun last year), so I decided to go in the total opposite direction and be the least sexy thing ever: George Washington. ha ha Halloween weekend was not too exciting, but fun ( Read more... )

Oh, Joan. Maybe this is the libertarian in me coming out, but the risk to you (the individual) seems to far outweigh the collective benefit in this scenario. I would not go through with it. I do not think it is a good idea for you. However, the decision is, of course, ultimately up to you. *hugs*

thanks for all your advice, rach. we're actually not going through with the civ. disobed. act for next weekend, because our lawyer bailed on us and it's kind of important to have legal representation in this situation. but we may plan it for another time. so i got off the hook this time, but i'm going to have to make a decision about it soon. your ideas are good...we actually have tried to meet with her (twice!), have protested (legally) in front of her office once to show her we wanted her to talk with us, and faxed her hundreds of petitions signed by students about signing this bill as part of a letter-writing campaign. she's neglected to respons to any of this, so the civ. disobed act in her office would kind of be a last resort, the consummation of all our work and her ignoring us. but i do see your point about getting involved in other causes (i actually may be going to a lobbying session/protest in DC about the current genocide in Darfur) but also feel that we can't ignore the fact that people are still dying, that we are still ( ... )

Joaneh! I def agree about Halloween. My school is like full of the those kinda peoples normally, but lately "in the spirit of the holiday" clothes seem to be flying off. lol.

India... Joan I think that would be an amazing trip. I know you want to use ur spanish, but u can always pass ur expertise onto me (lord know im gonna need it). But as you said, you have lots of interests in the Indian culture and for some reason I can just see u there so perfectly. I really hope u get to go somewhere b/c u'd def get a lot of experience for ur future and it really is the chance of a lifetime.

O- and I agree w/ Rach on the act of civil disobedience. The negatives just seem too great: no parental support plus no financial aid will prob equal no school which equals no study abroad in india. Si? But I also agree- its up to u and i know u'll make the right decision for u. Be online again soon and we can chat. Mwah

ha ha "clothes seem to be flying off." i like that line. and true dat.

and so true about the civ. disobed....no fin aid. equals no study abroad, something i really want to do. there are other ways to make a difference. thanks for your advice. i might get more involved with the counter-recruitment part of the club, where we would set up tables at high schools in bridgeport and elsewhere that are targets for military recruiters (like, they go in and have kids sign up for the army or whatever during their lunchtime because of all the benefits) and have info about fin. aid options and college programs ...alternatives to recruiting to kids who feel they have other options. and we won't get arrested for doing that. thanks again! talk to you soon.

Well, I support your project to do a Bob Dylanesque piece, I'd be happy to help if you would like any. Civil disobedience does not appeal to me but it would be cool to meet with politicians. Is your goal to get media attention or to end the war? Community action is important but I think you should worry about your own obstacles in this effort before the bigger ones. Remember, home is where the heart lives.

Hope this helps a little and I'll catch ya soon.

well, our goal would be to get media attention which would show dissent among DeLauro's (a suppousedly anti-war Democrat) Democratic constiuents, and would put pressure on her to listen to us and hopefully take action and sign this anti-war bill, especially around Election time. The immediate attention we would hope to get from this act would, we hope, somewhere down the line, end the war. So, media attention is our immediate goal, to achieve our ultimate goal of ending the war. but, thanks for yoru advice, i appreciate it and will consider it when making my decision (which won't have to be for a while because we're not doing the civ. disobed. next weekend because our lawyer bailed on us). but thanks anyways.

And thanks for offering to help me with my final in music. I might need help with the recording, I have no idea how to do that....I also suck at singing, so I might need to find a singer. although Dylan wasn't really known for his vocal skills, and that added to his character....thanks again for your offer. see you tomorrow!
