Rashomon has a lot of interesting ideas but doesn't really execute them very well. That's right, I said Kurosawa doesn't know how to make his ideas work.  It's all over the top, full of lots of maniacal laughter, and goofy characters; it's difficult to take seriously. I agree with all of that, except I don't know who Jack DeJohnette is.

Apparently the convention was to overact in Japan in those times.

Also apparently, the reason the Seven Samurai is so great is that he infused it with tricks from Westerns.

I would totally fund a remake of Rashomon.

I did an uncredited draft of Almodovar's Volver.

I thought it was the other way around. That Westerns stole from him. Maybe it was both. I'm probably going to go see it next week at Cinematheque. That'll be a long 4 hours.
