Author's Note #1: This is not a happy, sunshine-filled fic. If the idea of heroin use, needles/syringes, angst, or illness in any way squicks you, turn around now. The addiction depicted in this story is not meant to be gratuitious, nor is it mean to glamorize the trials of such a very serious addiction. It's simply meant to be honest. Again, if you have any reservations, don't read it.

Author's Note #2, to be read after completing the fic:
Thanks for making it this far. Anyone who's known anyone facing addiction knows that the path down that road - and the path out - can be different for everyone. So can the reactions to the drug. I did a lot of research, from government "just say no"-style websites to pro-heroin writings (they exist) to personal experiences of friends and acquaintances, and while all experiences had certain key elements, not every experience was the same. In this story, Adam starts out with a small addiction that allows him to remain functional, and it snowballs into something much bigger than he is.
The Adam of this story doesn't pursue chemical rehab treatments, though those are a large part of the market on addiction; they are by no means the only option. Some heroin addicts sell their bodies to pay for an addiction, while some can't even summon the ability for sexual contact. I'm not an expert. The experiences that Adam go through are a combination of everything I learned about heroin use from individuals I personally know, publications, and good old fashioned research, and aren't meant to provide a primer on heroin, nor do they represent every experience on the drug.
