English Canada and french speaking Canada have had many different points of view about a variety of subjects throughout history. These difference of opinions have caused many disputes between french and english Canada. Begining in the 1960's, Quebec started going through a Quiet Revolution, where in they went from a rural society that was known as Canada's laughing stock, to a vibrant industrial, urban province. Quebec nationalism was also on the rise, and some Quebecers felt that quebec needed to be its own seperate nation, independant in spirit, but still closely linked to Canada. But not all of Quebec were completely for this, seperatist movement. There are maby english speaking people in quebec, who happen to own most of the industry and money making offices in Quebec. And not to mention the Aboriginal peoples whom ownd vast amounts of lant in northern Quebec, they did not want to Seperate from Canada at all. Therefore, Neither Pierre Trudeau, Rene Leveque, or Brian Mulrouney spoke for all of Quebec, because Quebec could not decide on what it really wants.
Firstly you have Pierre Elliot Trudeau, a very well educated, bilingual Quebecer. He believed that Quebec should be a province in Canada, just like the rest of the provinces, equal in everyway. But, this was not all the truth, if Quebec were to join Confederation as just another province, its would perminatly become a minority seeings how there are 9 english speaking provinces, and then Quebec. Trudeau, did have his supporters though. English speaking Quebec residents, who were found in the upper 5% of Quebecs population were all in favour of letting the federal government take care of Quebec. This is because their businesses can flurish with the help of Trudeau and his federalist government. Trudeau also had alot of people in quebec who opposed this idea, these people are the workers of Quebec. They feel that the federal government will forget about them and that the french culture would eventually be assimilated into Canadian culture, and they really did not want that. Also, Trudeau had the support of the Aboriginal groups in Northern Quebec. The Aboriginals did not want Quebec to Sperate from Canada and become a completely french nation. Simply because they, the aboriginals, ownd a vast amount of land in quebec and they were fine with staying apart of canada, because they had their own agenda with the government that they needed to slove.
Then, on the opposite side of the spectrum, you have Rene Leveque. He believed that Quebec should be its own nation and wanted to preserve the french culture. Leveque wanted Quebec to have its own government that will look after Quebec, and not bow down to other people's prospective and have the government own industry and make a profit out of it. Instead of having the Canadian companies control most of Quebec. This Obviously angered the English speaking companies that were pumping Quebec out of house and home. Also, not all Quebecers wanted to suceed from the contry, the over 1 million english speaking Canadains living in quebec, who were doing pretty well for themselves, were opposed to quebec seperating from their beloved federal system. The Aboriginals were also opposed to Quebec seperating, they had a bone to pick with Canada's federal government about land claims and they were also fighting for the right to self-goven themselves. The Aboriginals owned alot of land up in Quebec, so Leveque had to get the aboriginals on his side.
